Huisman Leads Rebels to 9-7 Win Over South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ole Miss shortstop Justin Huisman drive in four runs with three hits Sunday and then took the mound to save a 9-7 Southeastern Conference baseball win over South Carolina with two innings of relief.
The win salvaged the third game of the series and broke a six game losing streak for the Rebels who improved to 7-11 overall and 1-2 in the SEC. South Carolina dropped to 15-5, 2-1. The win also broke an 11-game losing streak to South Carolina dating back to the 1995 season.
Dan McShea, 2-0, the second of five Mississippi pitchers, was the winner. Scott Barber, 1-3, the second of five South Carolina pitchers, took the loss.
South Carolina scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and led 3-1 when a 35 minute rain delay halted play. When play resumed, South Carolina upped its lead to 4-1 but Mississippi tied it with three runs on four hits in the top of the third and sent South Carolina starter Chris Spigner to the showers.
After South Carolina regained the lead at 5-4, Mississippi tied it in the top of the fourth and took a one run lead in the fifth when Huisman's single drove in Chad Hill, who had doubled. Huisman doubled with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, clearing the bases, to expand Mississippi's lead to 9-5.
South Carolina scored single runs in the seventh and eighth. Huisman relieved Nathan Lyons with the bases loaded and no outs in the South Carolina eighth inning. Marcus McBeth scored on a single by Adam Poe but Brian Roberts was out at the plate on the play and Huisman retired the next two Gamecocks to leave two runners stranded.
Huisman retired the Gamecocks in order in the ninth inning, striking out the final two batters to earn his fourth save of the season.
Mississippi collected 15 hits to South Carolina's 11 with Huisman, Clint Farrar and Hill having doubles. Huisman, Farrar and Brad Henderson had three hits apiece with John Massey and Kris Cox getting two. Tripp Kelly and Marcos Rios had doubles for South Carolina with Rios and Tim Angiolini each getting three hits. Poe had two hits.
