Baseball Moves Within One Game of College World Series with Win Over Auburn
6/5/2026 | Baseball
AUBURN, Ala. โ No. 18 Ole Miss baseball took the game one advantage in the 2026 Auburn Super Regional with a 6-4 victory over the Tigers on Friday evening at Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park.
ย
With the win, the Rebels (40-21) have reached the 40-win plateau in back-to-back seasons and are one win away from traveling to Omaha, Nebraska, to compete in the College World Series. Under head coach Mike Bianco, Ole Miss has reached 40 wins for the 12th time.
ย
Judd Utermark hit his 22nd home run of the season en route to Ole Miss' game one victory. In doing so, he tied his single-season career best, which also serves as a tie for the second most homers in one season by any Rebel in program history. Collin Reuter also provided power for the Rebels with a homer in the sixth inning, giving Ole Miss an insurmountable lead
ย
Four Rebels had at least two hits against the Tigers, which includes Utermark. Brayden Randle drove the first two of Ole Miss' runs home, his fourth multi-RBI game this season. Austin Fawley and Dom Decker also added a run each in addition to the pair of runs they contributed.
ย
Ole Miss sent a trio of pitchers to the mound to take game one of its super regional, starting with Hunter Elliott. Elliott worked 4.1 innings and limited damage with two strikeouts and two earned runs. Hudson Calhoun and Walker Hooks played in relief to cap the remainder of the game. As a unit, the trio struck out seven batters to five walks.
ย
Ole Miss entered the scoring column first by way of a Randle single in the second inning. With Hayden Federico at second and Owen Paino at first, Randle hit a sharp grounder into right field to send a scrambling Federico home. The following inning, Auburn tied the game at one apiece.
ย
Randle continued to contribute to Ole Miss' cause with his second RBI of the game in the fourth inning. Fawley doubled with two outs, which allowed Randle to step in and hit another single into left center to beat the shift, sending Fawley home. The momentum remained with Ole Miss in the fifth, as Utermark delivered with a two-run homer, the 51st of his career, to put the Rebels ahead 4-1. Auburn scored in the fifth to shorten the lead to two.
ย
The Rebels poured on when Reuter took the plate in the sixth. Following an Auburn pitching change, Reuter blasted his seventh home run of the season to score himself and Randle to extend the lead to 6-2. However, Auburn slimmed Ole Miss' lead with a run after a double in the sixth inning.
ย
Calhoun, who entered in the fifth inning, rebounded in the seventh, going 1-2-3 in the inning. After Calhoun gave up a walk after 2.2 innings, Hooks entered and eliminated Auburn's chance at a comeback in the eighth. Hooks fanned a pair in the inning and despite a ninth inning home run from Auburn, continued with a strong performance in the ninth to give the Rebels the advantage in the supers.
ย
Up next, Ole Miss has the opportunity to punch its ticket to the College World Series for the first time since 2022 in Saturday's matchup against Auburn. First pitch for Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN.
