OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team will host a pair of key SEC matches this weekend at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, beginning with Georgia on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Rebels will welcome South Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Friday's match is very significant in the race for the SEC Championship, as both teams come in with 4-1 records in the SEC. The Rebels have won seven of their last eight including a huge win over Florida last Friday.
Sophomore James Shortall picked up his 30th win of the season on Sunday, defeating South Florida's Fabio Tintori 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. He needs one more win to reach 50 victories for his career. Junior Martin Sjoqvist has won seven in a row and is 13-2 in dual matches, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Georgia enters the match with a 12-2 overall record. Their lone SEC loss was a 4-3 decision to Florida in Gainesville. The Bulldogs are led by senior Hisham Hemeda, who is ranked No. 11 in the nation.
The Bulldogs have won two straight over the Rebels including a 4-3 win in Athens last year. Over the last few years, the Georgia/Ole Miss match has been exciting with four of the last five meetings coming down to the wire.
On Sunday, the Rebels will host 11th-ranked South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 9-7 overall, 2-4 in the SEC. They are coming off back-to-back losses to Georgia and LSU, last weekend. The Gamecocks have four players ranked among the top 100 in the nation.
