Men's Track Finishes Second at ACC-SEC Challenge

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Ole Miss men's track team captured five events, and provisionally qualified its 4x400-meter relay team for the NCAA Indoor Championships, as the Rebels finished third at Saturday's ACC-SEC Challenge, hosted by the University of Florida.

The host Gators captured the men's title with 109 points, followed by South Carolina in second with 97.33 points.

The Lady Rebels finished eighth with 35 points, as Florida also captured the women's team title. Junior Tisha Parker led the Lady Rebels by winning the triple jump and placing second in the long jump. Parker established a new school indoor record in the triple jump with a leap of 40-feet-7.75 to break her own mark of 40-6.25.

On the men's side, seniors Alonzo Banks, Bernard Kuria and Marcus Jones, and sophomore Chad Dixon all were event winners. Banks won the 800 meters with a personal best time of 1:50.46. His time also ranks fourth on the Rebels' all-time top indoor performances list.

Kuria won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:46.96 and senior teammate Calvin Thigpen placed sixth in the race. Dixon took first-place honors in the mile with a time of 4:16.48.

Jones jumped 7--0.5 to win the high jump, while sophomore Savante' Stringfellow also finished fifth with a leap of 6-8.75. Jones also finished second in the triple jump, and Stringfellow also placed third in the long jump.

The Rebels' 4x400-meter relay team finished first with a time of 3:10.25 to come in under the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:12.00. The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 5-6 at Indianapolis, Ind.

Other top performances for the Rebels included senior Wayne Woollery placing third in the 400-meter dash, junior Larry Henderson finishing seventh in the 3,000 meters, Kyle Wallace was third in the pole vault and John Frierson was fourth in the shot put.

Other top performances for the Lady Rebels included sophomore Teneeshia Jones, who finished third in the 55-meter hurdles, fourth in the 200 meters and eighth in the 55-meter dash. Sophomore Brandy Barnett tied for sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-4.25, and the Lady Rebels' 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth.

The Rebels and Lady Rebels will be in action again next Friday and Saturday at the Kentucky Invitational, in Lexington, Ky.
