Ole Miss Vs. Memphis Quotes

6/21/1999 | Football

HEAD COACH TOMMY TUBERVILLE

"It was a great start to the season. We really didn't know what to expect. I was really pleased with the overall effort. That was the main thing. We found out one thing. Our guys are in pretty good shape. No one even came close to cramping. The effort was great throughout the game.

Offensively, we have to start there. We controlled the snaps. You're gonna win most games when you can snap the ball 80 times. Romaro Miller, his first start. You couldn't ask for much more. He surprised me. I know he surprised a lot of people in the stands. The way he threw the ball. He had a lot of poise. He ran the football, and that gives us an extra dimension.

When you look at the whole thing on offense, our offensive line is much better. They controlled their defensive line. We subbed in the middle of the fourth quarter. Our guys were in great shape. They gave our running backs a lot of good holes. Probably the difference in the game was that our defensive line could control their offensive line."

"The kicking game. Parts were good with the punting, but we want to get better with the point after attempts and field goals. We might need a change. We're gonna find somebody to make an extra point."

Ole Miss Players

ROMARO MILLER

"I give myself a C' grade for my performance today. There were some passes that weren't there that I threw, but overall, it was pretty good."

"I had fun today. I knew that anything could happen in the first game thi season, so I was glad to win. We need to improve for next week against Auburn. They have a good defense and are really going to come after us."

"Memphis had a great defensive line. I'm proud of the way that the offensive line came together and played. They played a lot of zone early and then came at us with the blitz."

CORY PETERSON

"We were all anxious to see Romaro perform in a real game. He's the kind of player who can take over a game at anytime. I'm excited now - they can't sack him. What can we say, It's Miller time."

"I don't think I was a go-to' guy. The way the defense was playing, it was opening up hitches. I was fortunate enough to catch some balls. I worked hard on my speed this summer as well as cutting back on defensive backs. I tried it today, and it worked well."

"My confidence is definitely up. Auburn is going to try and hit Romaro more next week. This was an important game, but I feel that next week is more important because it's the conference."

GARY THIGPEN

"It was important for the offense to move the ball today. We put it in Romaro's hands and he lived up to the hype."

"Our main objective today was to try and stop the run. They had a few good runs, but overall we played well."

On the interception:

"I was just trying to make a play. We were just trying to put the ball back in the offense's hands."

MEMPHIS QUOTES

HEAD COACH RIP SCHERER

"It was a disappointing loss. I thought wed play better than we did, and I know were better than the score indicated. We need to be more productive running the ball than we were today."

"They did a good job today. We left them on the field too long and that started to wear on us. You cant have missed assignments and give up big plays. We missed too many tackles."

"Kenton did some good things today. He showed poise, made good throws and good decisions. It was good to see Kenton and the kids bounce back. They never quit, but it was too little too late."

"Romaro Miller looked like an experienced quarterback in his first game. I liked his arm strength and his poise."

QUOTING TIGER QUARTERBACK KENTON EVANS:

"I came out relaxed and ready to play. Give their defense a lot of credit for putting pressure on our offense. We need to study the tape and get ready to play in front of our home crowd next week."
