October 31, 1998

  • Today's attendance of 50,577 is a new Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field record, breaking the old record of 48,371 set on September 12, 1998, against Auburn. As was the case in the Auburn game, today's attendance was the largest on-campus crowd in the state of Mississippi. It was the fourth time this season that Ole Miss has drawn more at home than last year's capacity of 42,577. The only game which did not go over last year's capacity was 38,116 against Arkansas State.
  • Deuce McAllister passed the 1,000 yard mark for his career, as he rushed for 176 yards bringing his career total to 1,135. He is the 36th player in Rebel history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a career. His 176 yards today is tied for the 12th-best single-game rushing performance in Ole Miss history (tied with John Fourcade vs. Vanderbilt in 1979). His 188-yard performance versus Alabama on Oct. 10 was the eighth-best single-game rushing performance in Rebel history.
  • Joe Gunn rushed for 63 yards today, bringing his season total to 524 yards, and Deuce McAllister's 176 yards today brought his season total to 737 yards. This is the first time that Ole Miss has had two players gain 500 yards or more rushing in a season since 1990 when running back Randy Baldwin and quarterback Tom Luke gained 970 and 519 yards, respectively.
  • Cory Peterson's 147 yards receiving gives him career total of 1,129 yards. He is the 18th player in Ole Miss history to pass the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards. His 147-yard performance is the seventh-best for a single game in Ole Miss history. Earlier this season, Peterson recorded 164 versus Memphis, which was the fourth-best single-game receiving mark in Rebel history. As for his 1,129 career yards, Peterson is now 15th on the Ole Miss career receiving yards chart.
  • Carlisle McGee's 41-yard field goal was his career long. His previous career best was a 39-yarder in Ole Miss' 30-17 win over Arkansas State last Saturday.
  • Romaro Miller passed for 279 yards in today's win. He has passed for over 200 yards in five games this season. He is only the third quarterback to throw for more than 200 yards in five games during one season. The other two quarterbacks to accomplish the feat were John Darnell (1989) and Stewart Patridge (1997).
  • Today's 37-31 victory is the 31st straight win for the Rebels when scoring more than 30 points. The last time Ole Miss lost a game when scoring 30 or more points was Nov. 4, 1989, against LSU, a 35-30 Tiger win in Oxford.
  • The last time that the Rebels beat the LSU Tigers in two consecutive years was in the 1968 (27-24, Baton Rouge) and 1969 (26-23, Jackson) seasons. Ole Miss defeated LSU llast year in Baton Rouge, 36-21.
  • Grant Heard's 40 yards receiving moved him into ninth place on the Ole Miss career receiving yards list with 1,216 yards.
  • Romaro Miller's 279-yard performance today gives him 1,800 yards for the season. He moved into eighth place on the Ole Miss single-season passing yardage chart with his 1,800 yards. He moved into eighth place past Archie Manning, who passed for 1,762 yards in 1969.
  • Rufus French had four receptions today, increasing his career total to 74 catches. His 74 catches tie him for second place with former All-America Kris Mangum on the Ole Miss career receptions chart by a tight end. French has now caught 74 passes for 730 yards in his career.
  • Romaro Miller threw for four touchdown passes for the first time in his career. His previous career best was two touchdown tosses in the Rebels' 30-10 victory over Memphis.
  • Today's was the Rebels' third overtime game of the season. The other two were against SMU and Alabama. Ole Miss has played in four overtime games in its history, and has a 3-1 record in those games. The Rebels have defeated Central Florida (24-23, 1997), SMU (48-41, 1998), Alabama (17-20, 1998) and LSU (37-31, 1998).
  • Ole Miss defeated LSU today, 37-31 when the University was celebrating its Sesquicentennial. The two schools also met almost 50 years ago to the date when Ole Miss was celebrating its Centennial. The Rebels also won that game, 49-19 on Oct. 30, 1948, in Baton Rouge.
