6/21/1999 | Track and Field
May 15, 1999
ATHENS, Ga. - Rebel sophomore Savante Stringfellow captured the long jump title to lead the Ole Miss track and field teams at the Southeastern Conference Championships on Saturday. The Jackson, Miss., native won the title with a jump of 26-2 3/4, out-distancing Arkansas Melvin Lister who was second with a jump of 26-2 1/4.
"I came here to win, but the NCAAs are what I'm really shooting for, "said Stringfellow. "After winning the SEC long jump title. My goal this season is to jump 27 feet. (Melvin) Lister is a great competitor. I've seen him pass three people on the very last jump, so I was concerned when I got the lead."
Stringfellow is the first Rebel to claim an SEC title since Alonzo Banks won the 400 meters in 1996. Stringfellow is also only the second Rebel to win the long jump title, as former standout Ralph Spry took top honors in the long jump in 1983. Stringfellow automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump earlier this year.
In other mens finals competition, Chad Dixon placed seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Dixon was seventh with a time of 9:25.64.
On the women's side, sophomore Brandy Barnett placed second in the high jump with a school-record mark of 5-10 . Barnetts 5-10 mark broke the previous record of 5-10, and provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
In preliminaries on Saturday, Alonzo Banks and Teneeshia Jones advanced to Sundays finals in their respective events. Banks was third in the 400 meters preliminaries with a time of 46.09 seconds, while Jones was seventh in the 100 meters (11.59 seconds) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (13.46). Jones time of 13.46 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles broke her previous school record in the event (13.55).
The SEC Championships conclude on Sunday.
