Tisha Parker Improves NCAA Championship Aspirations

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Junior Tisha Parker raised her chances of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships by improving on her own provisional mark in the long jump, and both the Rebel and Lady Rebel 4x400-meter relay teams were victorious at the Rod McCravy Memorial, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Parker jumped 20-feet-4.25 inches to finish second in the long jump, bettering her season-best of 20-1.5 set back on December 6 at Arkansas State. Heading into this weekend, Parker had the 16th-best long jump in the nation. She also recorded a fourth-place showing in the triple jump with a leap of 40-8.25, and finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.68 seconds.
The Ole Miss men's 4x400-meter relay team finished with a time of 3:10.62 to win the event, edging second-place Georgia Tech with a time of 3:10.72 and third-place Mississippi State with a time of 3:10.98. The Rebels 1,600-meter relay squad also has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, to be held March 5-6 in Indianapolis, with a time of 3:10.25 set last weekend at Florida.
The Lady Rebels' 4x400-meter relay team posted a winning time of 3:51.49.
Other top performances for Ole Miss Saturday included Teneeshia Jones placing second in the 200 meters with a mark of 24.15, and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Brandy Mack finished second in the 400 meters, freshman Chika Chuku placed third in the 800 meters, and sophomore Brandy Barnett posted a third-place finish in the high jump. Freshmen Wanikka Vance and Dawn Dickerson, placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash.
On the men's side, senior Bernard Kuria ran to a second-place showing in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 8:25.12. Senior Marcus Jones tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 6-11, and also recorded a third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 48-2. Sophomore Savante' Stringfellow finished sixth behind Jones in the high jump. Seniors Alonzo Banks and Wayne Woollery placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 400 meters, junior Kino Mosley finished seventh in the long jump, and junior John Frierson placed seventh in the shot put. Sophomore Tobias Anderson placed eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.92.
This weekend's meet was Ole Miss' final tune-up as a team before the SEC Indoor Championships, Feb. 20-21 in Gainesville, Fla. The Rebels and Lady Rebels will send several athletes to Colorado Springs, Colo., next weekend for the US West Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Air Force.
