OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss pitchers walked 14 batters in dropping a 20-15 decision to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Tuesday afternoon. The Rebels, 6-7, used seven pitchers on the day and lost leads of 6-0 and 11-7 to the Blazers who improved to 4-2.
AWe didn=t have a game at all on the mound today. We took away opportunities to get any outs by giving up so many walks,@ Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison said. Ole Miss= Robert Shelton led off the second inning with a solo home run and Glen Morris followed with a three-run shot to cap a five run inning. Ole Miss increased the lead to 6-0 in the top of the third, but gave up seven runs on two hits and six walks to fall behind 7-6.
John Husiman and Brad Henderson each homered in the top of the fourth to power Ole Miss to an 10-7 lead, but the lead was short lived as the Blazers put up nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Ole Miss added a run in the seventh and eighth innings and two more in the ninth, but UAB responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh and three more in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
Jon Dickens, 0-1, took the loss after pitching three innings and allowing three runs on three hits. Nick Bridenback improved to 1-0 for UAB after pitching three and two-thirds of an inning.
The Rebels travel to Cleveland, Miss., to take on Delta State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.
