OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss guard Becky Myatt scored 17 points as the Lady Rebel basketball team defeated the Southern Mississippi Lady Eagles, 76-65, in the Tad Smith Coliseum Saturday night. The Lady Rebels improved to 6-1, while Southern Mississippi dropped to 2-4 on the season.
Myatt, a sophomore from Bon Aqua, Tenn., sank 6-of-8 shots, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, to lead Ole Miss. Overall, the Lady Rebels shot 53 percent from three-point land, draining 7-of-13 three-point shots, and 50 percent from the floor on 25-of-50 shooting.
"I was excited that we were able to hold on and pull out the victory," said Myatt. " My teammates moved the ball around to set me up for some great shots. That really got me going in the game."
With the score in favor of Ole Miss at 30-28 with 3:36 left in the first half, Myatt sparked a 10-0 run before the half. Myatt drained two three-point shots during the run to build a 38-28 half-time lead.
The Lady Rebels extended the lead to 66-45 with 4:39 left to play in regulation, but Southern Miss jumped back into the game with a 11-2 run over a 1:26 minute-span to pull within 69-58. It proved too little to late.
"We are glad to be 6-1," said Ole Miss head Coach Ron Aldy. "It wasn't pretty at times, but it was a win over an in-state team. We have got to do a better job of maintaining a lead. Fortunately for us, Becky has been one of our most consistent performers this year. For her to step up tonight is just one of her qualities."
Senior forward Tarsha Bethley added 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, while sophomore point guard, Chandra Dorsey recorded ten points and two assists for the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Eagles' Angela Johnson led four players in double figure scoring with 13 points. Southern Miss' Jessica Woods scored 12 points in the loss, followed by LaShonda Smith (11points) and Angela Atterberry (10 points.)
Ole Miss will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:00 p.m. as they host Tennessee Tech at Tad Smith Coliseum.
