Stringfellow Named to Pan-Am, World Championship Teams

6/28/1999 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore Savante Stringfellow, a member of the Rebel track and field squad, earned a spot on both the Pan Am and World Championship teams, as a result of his third-place finish in the long jump at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. The Jackson, Miss., native will compete in the long jump for the United States in both meets.

The Pan Am Games will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) in late July, while the World Championships are scheduled for late August in Seville, Spain.

"This is a tremendous honor for Savante," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "In track and field, this accomplishment ranks up there with winning an NCAA individual title, and some consider it a bigger accomplishment than that.

"Savante is also one of a very few underclassmen to make the team each year. Many out-going seniors make the team, but it is rare for an underclassmen to earn the honor. Savante has worked extremely hard to get to this point, and he only wants to get better. He will represent the Rebel track and field program and Ole Miss well at both meets."

At the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, Stringfellow placed third in the long jump with a mark of 26-0 3/4. He was the highest amateur to place in the event. During the 1999 outdoor season at Ole Miss, Stringfellow won the long jump title at the Southeastern Conference Championships on May 16 with a jump of 26-2 3/4. In early June, he finished third in the long jump at the NCAA Championships, recording a mark of 26-7 1/4 and earning All-America honors.

Stringfellow will be the first athlete in Ole Miss track and field history to compete in the Pan Am Games, and is only the second Rebel performer to make the World Championships team. Former Rebel standout George Kersh participated in the 800 meters at the 1991 World Championships.
