WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Canada) - Ole Miss sophomore Savante Stringfellow finished eighth in the long jump competition at the 13th-annual Pan American Games late Sunday. The Pan Am track and field events were held at University Stadium, located on the University of Manitoba campus.
Stringfellow placed eighth with a jump of 25-2. Cuba's I.L. Pedroso Soler won the long jump title with a mark of 27-11 . Dwight Phillips, Stringfellow's American teammate, was seventh with a jump of 25-2 .
"I talked with Savante late Sunday night, and he told me that he really enjoyed the competition," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "He did not do as well as he had hoped. Savante said that he had one really good jump, but it was called foul.
"However, this was a great experience for him to be able to wear the USA uniform and compete for his country. Now, Savante can use what he learned at the Pan Am Games and hopefully have even better results at the World Championships in Spain in August."
Stringfellow qualified for the Pan Am Games with his third-place showing in the long jump at the USA Track and Field Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., in late June. The former Jackson Provine High School standout is the first-ever Ole Miss Rebel track and field performer to compete at the Pan Am Games.
In late August, Stringfellow will compete in the World Championships, which will be held in Seville, Spain. He will be the second Rebel to participate in the World Championships, as former standout George Kersh ran in the 800 meters in 1991.
Stringfellow concluded his sophomore season this past spring, winning the Southeastern Conference long jump title and placing third in the event at the NCAA Championships. He earned All-America honors with his third-place finish at the NCAAs.
