OXFORD, Miss. - Rebel running back Joe Gunn and kicker Les Binkley highlighted Thursday's final team scrimmage of the preseason. Gunn rushed for 97 yards on 14 carries with a pair of touchdowns, while Binkley made field goals of 37 and 47 yards.
The full-squad scrimmage allowed the players to work on game management and situations, playing with an officiating crew as well as a play clock. First-year head coach David Cutcliffe said the game-like atmosphere had a positive effect on the players and coaches.
"There is nothing like setting up and having to work in a game-like situation," Cutcliffe said. "It tested our operation. There were certainly some positive things in the kicking game. I thought our scout team did an outstanding game. We definitely got some things out of this."
On offense, junior quarterback Romaro Miller completed six of eight passes for 68 yards. David Morris was three for four for 13 yards, while Eli Manning made six of 16 for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Redshirt freshman receiver Mike Salters had a strong scrimmage for the scout team with a pair of receptions for 81 yards and a TD.
Ole Miss returns to practice Friday afternoon. The Rebels open their season Sept. 4 at Memphis.
