Memphis head coach Rip Scherer is starting his fifth season with the Tigers and his eighth overall as a head coach. Scherer has compiled a 13-31 mark at Memphis and is 42-50 overall. He is 0-2 against Ole Miss.

Scouting Memphis: The Tigers are returning eight starters on both sides of the ball from last year. Headlining the returnees on offense is senior RB Gerard Arnold, who rushed for 1,059 yards last season. Sophomore QB Neil Suber returns after throwing for 930 yards in seven games, along with his favorite target, senior WR Damien Dodson (42 rec., 753 yds., 2 TDs). The defensive returners are led by junior LB Kamal Shakir (154 tackles) and senior DB Reginald Howard (69 tackles). On special teams, sophomore K Ryan White hit on 16-of-16 field goal attempts last season, including 12-of-12 from 30 yards and out.

REBELS SET FOR FIRST SEASON UNDER CUTCLIFFE The 1999 campaign will mark Ole Miss' first full season under new head coach David Cutcliffe. The Cutcliffe-era got an early start last December 31 as the former Tennessee offensive coordinator coached the Rebels to a 35-18 upset over heavily-favored Texas Tech in the Sanford Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. Cutcliffe was named the University's 34th head football coach on December 2 after serving 16 seasons at the University of Tennessee.

PRE-SEASON POLLS With 17 returning starters, Ole Miss is receiving some national recognition this summer. Sport Magazine rated Ole Miss No. 19 in its pre-season Top 30. Football Digest ranked the Rebels 24th in its pre-season Top 25. In The Associated Press preseason Top 25, released on Aug. 14, Ole Miss ranked tied for sixth among "Others Receiving Votes" garnering 23 tallies. The Rebels picked up three votes in the preseason ESPN/USA Today preseason coaches poll.

SEASON-OPENERS Ole Miss is 77-23-5 in season openers dating back to 1893. During the 1990s, the Rebels are 6-3 in season openers, and have won their last three season-openers, including a 30-10 win over Memphis last season in Oxford. This will be the 32nd time the Rebels have met Memphis to open its season. Ole Miss is 25-4-2 in season-openers against the Tigers. This is also the first time the Rebels are opening their season on the road since 1995 when they lost 46-13 at Auburn. When opening the season on the road, Ole Miss is 23-19-2.

REBEL COACHES REGULAR SEASON DEBUTS While first-year head coach David Cutcliffe officially made his Ole Miss head coaching debut against Texas Tech in the Sanford Independence Bowl on Dec. 31, Saturday's game with Memphis will be Cutcliffe's first regular season game at Ole Miss. Since the legendary John Vaught took over the Rebel program in 1947, Ole Miss coaches are 4-3 in their regular season debuts. However, the last three new Rebel bosses making their debuts have fallen: Billy Brewer to Memphis State, 37-17 in 1983, interim head coach Joe Lee Dunn to Auburn, 22-17 in 1994, and Tommy Tuberville, also to Auburn, 46-13 in 1995.

THE LAST TIME VS. MEMPHIS

Game #1 Ole Miss 30, Memphis 10Sept. 5, 1998 Oxford, Miss.Attendance: 46,191 Vaught-Hemingway Stadium
Sophomore Romaro Miller recorded the best-ever performance in a first collegiate start by an Ole Miss quarterback with a 332-yard, two-touchdown outing in leading the Rebels to a 30-10 victory over Mid-South rival Memphis in the 1998 season opener on Sept. 5. Miller also had 23 yards rushing and compiled the fourth-best, single-game total offense mark in Ole Miss history with 355 yards. Miller's favorite target in the win over the Tigers was junior Cory Peterson, who caught nine passes for a career-best 164 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown reception. Peterson's 164-yard performance was the fourth best single-game outing by a receiver in Rebel history. The Ole Miss defense was equally as impressive, holding the Memphis ground attack to only 21 yards rushing. The Tigers also managed only 235 yards of total offense. After a scoreless first quarter, the Miller-Peterson connection struck for scoring strikes on successive drives to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. The first score came on a six-yard touchdown connection from Miller to Peterson. The touchdown completed a 19-play, 78-yard drive. On the next Rebels' possession, Miller and Peterson didn't take quite as long, as the two connected on a 77-yard scoring play that took only 14 seconds. The 77-yard play is tied for the eighth longest in Ole Miss football history. After the teams traded field goals in the third quarter, Ole Miss went to its ground game in the final quarter of play, as sophomore Deuce McAllister scored on a one-yard run to put the Rebels ahead 24-3. True freshman Charles Stackhouse finished the scoring for Ole Miss with a three-yard scoring run with a minute remaining in the contest. McAllister led the Rebel rushing attack with 73 yards on 15 carries, while redshirt freshman Joe Gunn rushed 10 times for 54 yards, including a 35-yard scamper on his first collegiate carry. Ken Lucas also had a career day with five catches for 72 yards. Defensively, Al Rice led the Rebels with seven total tackles, while true freshman Eddie Strong had four tackles and his first collegiate quarterback sack for a nine-yard loss.

REBELS LOOK TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES Ole Miss will look to push its winning streak against non-conference opponents to 16 games Saturday at Memphis. The last time the Rebels lost to a non-conference opponent was to the Tigers, 17-16, in Oxford back on Nov. 5, 1994. In their current 15-game winning streak versus non-conference schools, the Rebels are 5-0 versus Conference USA schools, having defeated Tulane three times and Memphis twice. The following chart shows Ole Miss' recent success against non-conference opponents dating back to 1994:

Three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 11, and the winner will be named Dec. 10 during the 15th Annual Butkus Award Gala in Orlando.

Spearman enters his senior year with 186 career tackles, including 106 solo. He led the Rebels with 84 tackles last season, including 43 solo tackles, and also recorded two sacks for 27 yards.

McALLISTER NAMED PRESEASON DOAK WALKER CANDIDATE Junior RB Deuce McAllister has been named as one of 38 preseason candidates for the 1999 Dr. Pepper Doak Walker Award. The list will be cut down to eight semifinalists in late Novermber and the winner will be announced live on ESPN2's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9.

Last season, McAllister became the first Rebel rusher since 1950, and just the second in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. His 1,082 rushing yards from last season ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history, behind Kayo Dottley's 1,312 set in 1949.

WADE, SPEARMAN NAMED PERMANENT CAPTAINS FOR 1999 Senior LB Armegis Spearman and senior OT Todd Wade (Jackson, Miss.) have been named the Rebels' permanent team captains for the 1999 season. In addition, senior DT Kendrick Clancy (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), senior WR Cory Peterson (Germantown, Tenn.) and senior CB Tim Strickland (Memphis, Tenn.) have been named as the team's permanent tri-captains for 1999.

DEUCE JOINS ELITE COMPANY IN 1998 While junior RB Deuce McAllister (Morton, Miss.) joined Kayo Dottley as the school's only other 1,000-yard rusher last season, McAllister also joined another exclusive club. With his five 100-yard rushing performances, McAllister became just the fifth Ole Miss rusher to record at least five 100-yard rushing games in a single-season. The others were: Kayo Dottley (5, 1949), Cory Philpot (6, 1992), Dou Innocent (6, 1994), and John Avery (6, 1997). In addition, McAllister's five career 100-yard rushing games ranks fifth all-time in Ole Miss history. Innocent accumulated the most 100-yard rushing games, topping the century mark 10 times during his career (please see chart on page 4).

MILLER ALSO JOINED ELITE LIST IN 1998 Junior QB Romaro Miller (Shannon, Miss.) became just the third quarterback in school history last season to post at least five, 200-yard passing games in the season, joining John Darnell (1989) and Stewart Patridge (1997). To narrow that list even more, Miller recorded seven 200-yard passing games last season, joining Patridge as the only two Rebel signal callers to do so. Patridge posted nine 200-yard games in 1997. Miller, Darnell and Patridge are also the only three Ole Miss quarterbacks to have two, 300-yard passing performances in the same season.

DEUCE, GUNN GIVE REBELS ONE-TWO PUNCH Running backs junior Deuce McAllister and sophomore Joe Gunn (Amory, Miss.) combined to form the second-highest rushing tandem in school history in 1998. The duo totalled 1,628 yards on 335 carries, with McAllister rushing for 1,082 and Gunn 546. The 1949 duo of Kayo Dottley and Billy Mustin combined for the most rushing yards by two runners in school history with 1,867, when Dottley posted 1,312 yards and Mustin rushed for 555 yards. McAllister and Gunn also gave the Rebels their first pair of 500-yard rushers in the same season since 1990 when Randy Baldwin gained 970 yards and quarterback Tom Luke gained 519 yards on the ground.

Rebels In The "Red" Zone When the offense moves the ball inside the opponent's 20-yard line, the offense is considered to be in the "red zone," and in prime scoring position. The following chart shows how the Rebel offense performed inside the "red zone" last season.

WADE, SPEARMAN GARNER PRE-SEASON RECOGNITION Senior offensive lineman Todd Wade and senior linebacker Armegis Spearman were both named 1999 pre-season first-team All-SEC at the SEC Media Days.

THE SPORTING NEWS TABS MILLER AS ONE OF NATION'S BEST In its 1999 College Football preview, The Sporting News named junior Romaro Miller as the nation's fourth-best all-purpose quarterback. Last year in his first season as a starter, Miller threw for 2,273 yards - the fifth-highest single-season total in Ole Miss history. In the Rebels' Independence Bowl win, Miller went 14-for-23 for 216 yards and set an Independence Bowl record with three TD passes and was selected as Offensive Player of the Game.

OLE MISS AIMS FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON Ole Miss will be aiming for its third-straight winning season for the first time since stringing three-consecutive winning years from 1975 to 1977 under head coach Ken Cooper. The Rebels went 8-4 in 1997 and were 7-5 last year, winning bowl games in both years.

REBELS LOOK FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT BOWL APPEARANCE Ole Miss also enters the 1999 season in search of its third-consecutive bowl appearance. The Rebels defeated Marshall, 34-31, in the 1997 Ford Motor City Bowl in Pontiac, Mich., and upset 14-point favorite Texas Tech in last year's Sanford Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. The last time Ole Miss appeared in three-straight bowl games was between 1969 and 1971 at the end of the Rebels' remarkable string of 15-straight post-season appearances.

LUCKY NUMBER 30 Dating back to the 1989 season, Ole Miss has won its last 32 games when scoring 30 or more points in a game. The last time the Rebels scored 30 points and lost was against LSU on Nov. 4, 1989, when the Tigers defeated the Rebels 35-30 in Oxford. All seven of Ole Miss' wins last season, including in the Sanford Independence Bowl, came with the Rebels scoring 30 or more points.

MEMPHIS-AREA REBELS Ole Miss boasts seven players on its 1999 roster that hail from the Memphis-metropolitan area: junior K Les Binkley (Memphis/ Evangelical Christian), junior DE Shane Elam (Covington/High), senior WR Cory Peterson (Germantown/High), junior DE Antionne Scott (Memphis/ Briarcrest H.S.), freshman WR-DB Wes Scott (Memphis/University School), sophomore DT Anthony Sims (Memphis/Fairley), sophomore RB Charles Stackhouse (West Memphis, AR/High), and senior CB Tim Strickland (Memphis/ Hamilton H.S.).

MISSISSIPPI TIGERS According to the 1999 University of Memphis media guide, the Tigers have four players that call the state of Mississippi home: freshman OL Garfield Garth (Amory), senior P Ben Graves (Waynes-boro), senior LB Corey Irby (Meridian), and freshman OL Cedric McAfee (Philadelphia).

SIX HOME GAMES ON TAP IN 1999 Ole Miss has six home games on the slate for the 1999 season, beginning Sept. 11 versus Arkansas State. Also paying visits to Oxford this season are: Vanderbilt (Sept. 18), Tulane (Oct. 9), Alabama (Oct. 16), Arkansas (Nov. 6) and Georgia (Nov. 20). The game with the Green Wave on Oct. 9 will be the Homecoming contest.

INDEPENDENCE BOWL RECAPSanford Independence BowlGame #12 Ole Miss 35, Texas Tech 18Dec. 31, 1998 Shreveport, La.Attendance: 46,862 Independence Stadium

In what was probably the biggest upset of the 1998 bowl season, Ole Miss, under the direction of David Cutcliffe who was named the Rebel head coach just 29 days earlier, defeated Texas Tech, 35-18 in the 1998 Sanford Independence Bowl. With less than a month to assemble a staff and prepare for the bowl game, Cutcliffe had another setback leading up to the game when he was hospitalized for a week in Knoxville with pancreatitis. The Rebels arrived in Shreveport on Dec. 26, and Cutcliffe was able to rejoin his team a day later.

Once the game started, sophomore quarterback Romaro Miller put on a show, leading the Rebels to the win with his 216-yard, three-touchdown performance. Miller was named the bowl's Offensive MVP, and his three touchdown tosses set an Independence Bowl record. Miller's first touchdown pass came on a 33-yard strike to Ken Lucas to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Miller then struck again in the second quarter, connecting with Deuce McAllister for a 32-yard touchdown to give Ole Miss the lead for good at 14-7. After a scoreless third quarter, Miller's third touchdown pass -- a 26-yard connection with Cory Peterson -- increased the Rebel lead to 21-10. McAllister then put the game away with two more touchdowns in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter. A McAllister four-yard run put the Rebels up, 28-10, and after a Texas Tech score made it 28-18, McAllister returned the Red Raider on-side kick attempt 43 yards for the 35-18 final. McAllister's three touchdowns set an Independence Bowl record.

Defensively, Ole Miss proved just as tough. The Rebel defense shut down Texas Tech's offensive weapons in running back Ricky Williams and receiver Donnie Hart. Williams, who was fourth in the nation in rushing with 144 yards per game, managed only 85 yards on 23 carries. Hart caught only four passes for 50 yards. Kendrick Clancy was named the bowl's Defensive MVP, as he recorded seven tackles, including four TFL for 16 yards and one QB sack for seven yards. Anthony Magee tied an Independence Bowl record with two interceptions.
