OXFORD, Miss. - With the temperature above 100 degrees in the area Thursday, the Ole Miss Rebel football team went through its third day of two-a-days. Head coach David Cutcliffe said he has been pleased with the progress of the team so far and looks forward to Friday, when the Rebels put on the pads for the first time.

"We are anxious to get started in the morning," Cutcliffe said. "I think we are in better condition and we are excited to start hitting. The team is ready from a fundamental standpoint and conditioned for it. The intensity always picks up when you put on pads."

Despite the hot weather, Cutcliffe has been extremely pleased with the team's attitude and intensity in the early going, but says he is looking forward to getting everyone back on the practice field. Several players have been limited due to heat-related illness.

"The heat has been a little new to everybody and it's taken a toll somewhat," said Cutcliffe. "I am anxious to get to the point where we have the whole team out here from start to finish in both the morning and afternoon practices.

"One of the interesting things about putting on pads is the change in snapping between the center and the quarterback," Cutcliffe said. "Tomorrow we are going to find out if we can make the snap and get the play started off right. That's always a challenge."

In other news on Thursday, wide receiver Michael Slater of Vicksburg, a walk-on transfer from Hinds Community College, has left the team. Cutcliffe also announced that freshman wide receiver Lee Jackson of Marietta, Ga., is a partial qualifier, which means he will be on scholarship and can practice, but is ineligible to play this season.
