OLE MISS IN SEC OPENERS
This Saturday's game with Vanderbilt will be the Rebels 1999 Southeastern Conference opener. Since the formation of the SEC in 1933, Ole Miss is 30-31-4 in conference openers. The Rebels have opened their SEC slate in Oxford nine times and have gone 5-4, including losing to Auburn 17-0 last year. Saturday's game will mark the first time Ole Miss has played Vanderbilt in its SEC opener.

REBELS AIM FOR FIRST 3-0 START SINCE 1989
Ole Miss will aim for its first 3-0 start since the 1989 season this Saturday against Vanderbilt. Since the 1989 season, Ole Miss has gotten off to 2-0 starts in 1991, 1992, 1996 and 1997 before losing its third game of the season in each year. The 1989 Rebels opened their campaign with wins against Memphis State (20-13), Florida (24-19) and Arkansas State (34-31) en route to an 8-4 season that ended with a 42-29 win over Air Force in the Liberty Bowl.

2-0 STARTS A GOOD OMEN
Since John Vaught took over the Ole Miss football program in 1947, the Rebels have started their season 2-0 25 times. Out of those 25 times, Ole Miss has gone on to post an above .500-record 19 times and make 15 bowl appearances. Prior to this season, the last time the Rebels started out 2-0 was in 1997 when Ole Miss finished the year 8-4, including a 34-31 win over Marshall in the Ford Motor City Bowl.

Should the Rebels win Saturday, it may loom as an even better sign of things to come. Since 1947, Ole Miss has achieved 17 3-0 starts, and has failed to produce a winning season just twice, in 1981 (4-6-1) and 1982 (4-7).

CUTCLIFFE BECOMES SIXTH COACH IN OLE MISS HISTORY TO START 3-0
Including last year's Independence Bowl victory over Texas Tech and with wins over Memphis (3-0) and Arkansas State (38-14) to start the 1999 season, first-year head coach David Cutcliffe is just the sixth Ole Miss coach in school history to begin his Rebel tenure with a 3-0 mark, joining Dr. A.L. Bondurant (1893), Leo Detray (1912), Harry J. Mehre (1938), the legendary John Vaught (1947) and Billy Kinard (1971). With a win over Vanderbilt Saturday, Cutcliffe can join Detray (1912) as the only Rebel coach to win his first four games at Ole Miss. Bondurant, Mehre, Vaught and Kinard all lost their fourth game as the Rebel head coach after starting out 3-0. Ironically, Vanderbilt was the spoiler for two of those coaches as the Commodores defeated Mehre's 1938 squad 13-7 and knocking off Vaught's 1947 team 10-6. Both of those contests were played in Nashville.

CUTCLIFFE WINS HOME DEBUT
Saturday's 38-14 win over Arkansas State gave Cutcliffe a victory in his Oxford debut. With the win, new Ole Miss head football coaches are now 6-2 in their Oxford debuts since the legendary John Vaught won the first game he coached in Oxford back in 1947. The following chart shows how new Ole Miss head coaches have fared in their Oxford coaching debuts:

Since the SEC began divisional play in 1992, Ole Miss is 11-10 versus the SEC Eastern Division. The Rebels have gone 6-1 against the Commodores since divisional play started. The following chart shows how Ole Miss has fared against the SEC East since 1992:

REBELS ON TV
Saturday's game will mark the 98th time Ole Miss has played on TV, including the 15th time that Jefferson Pilot has televised a Rebel game. Ole Miss is 44-51-2 all-time in TV games. The Rebels are 7-8 on Jefferson Pilot. During the decade of the 1990s, Ole Miss is 15-19 in television games. The Rebels are 1-1 all-time versus Vanderbilt on TV, including last year's 30-6 win in Nashville which was carried by Jefferson Pilot.

LUCKY NUMBER 30
This past Saturday's 38-14 win over Arkansas State marked the 33rd straight game the Rebels have won when scoring 30 or more points dating back to the 1989 season. The last time the Rebels scored 30 points and lost was against LSU on Nov. 4, 1989, when the Tigers defeated the Rebels 35-30 in Oxford. All seven of Ole Miss wins last season, including the Sanford Independence Bowl, came with the Rebels scoring 30 or more points.

ALMOST PERFECT
The Ole Miss defense hasn't allowed the opposition to score in seven of the eight quarters played this season. All 14 of Arkansas State's points this past Saturday came in the opening quarter.

RED ZONE SUCCESS
After failing to score on two trips inside the 20-yard against Memphis on Sept. 4, the Rebels were a perfect 4-for-4 inside the "red zone" against Arkansas State this past Saturday. Ole Miss came away with three TDs and one field goal in its four trips inside the Arkansas State 20-yard line en route to its 38-14 win. For the season, the Rebels have scored on 4-of-6 attempts inside the red zone (see chart above).

Rebels In The "Red" Zone
When the offense moves the ball inside the opponent's 20-yard line, the offense is considered to be in the "red zone", and in prime scoring position. The following chart shows how the Rebel offense has perfomed inside the "red zone" this season:

GUNN'S ON THE RUN
Sophomore RB Joe Gunn (Amory, Miss.) has made the most of his opportunity filling in for the injured Deuce McAllister. Gunn had a career night against Arkansas State in this past Saturday's 38-14 win, rushing for a career-high 155 yards on a career-high tying 25 carries. It was Gunn's second straight 100-yard rushing performance after running for 114 yards on 25 carries in the season-opener at Memphis. It is also Gunn's fourth career 100-yard rushing performance. Gunn's previous career rushing high was 146 yards set last year at Vanderbilt. Gunn also caught two passes for a career-high 36 yards Saturday night to give him a career-high 191 all-purpose yards. One of his receptions was a career-long 30-yard catch and run out of the backfield to score Ole Miss first points of the night.

MILLER RECORDS EIGHTH CAREER 200-YARD PASSING GAME
Sophomore QB Romaro Miller's (Shannon, Miss.) 253 yards of passing this past Saturday night was the eighth 200-yard passing performance of his career (not including bowl games). Miller became just one of two Ole Miss signal-callers to record seven 200-yard passing games in a season last year, and his eight career 200-yard passing games ranks third on the Ole Miss career list. Kent Austin (1981-85) ranks first on that list with 11, and Stewart Patridge (1994-97) is second with nine.

Miller's 253-yard performance against Arkansas State also marked the fifth 250-yard performance of his career, which ranks fourth all-time in Ole Miss history. Austin holds the school record with seven 250-yard passing performances, followed by Archie Manning (1968-70) and Patridge with six (see chart on the right).

SHANNON CONNECTION
For the first time since their high school days together at Shannon High School, Miller and sophomore WR Jamie Armstrong (Plantersville, Miss.) hooked up on a scoring pass. Miller found Armstrong for a seven-yard TD pass with 5:26 left in the third quarter against Arkansas State to stretch the Rebels lead to 28-14. For Armstrong, it was his first career TD reception as a Rebel.

SPEARMAN ON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST
Senior LB Armegis Spearman (Bruce, Miss.) is one of of eight SEC players that are included on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, which is given by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Fla., to the nation's top collegiate linebacker. Three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 11, and the winner will be named Dec. 10 during the 15th Annual Butkus Award Gala in Orlando.

Through two games in 1999, Spearman has recorded eight tackles, including six solo stops. He also has recorded one sack and has pass break up.

For his career, Spearman has registered 194 career tackles, including 112 solo. He led the Rebels with 84 tackles last season, including 43 solo tackles, and also recorded two sacks for 27 yards.

McALLISTER NAMED PRESEASON DOAK WALKER CANDIDATE
Junior RB Deuce McAllister has been named as one of 38 preseason candidates for the 1999 Dr. Pepper Doak Walker Award. The list will be cut down to eight semifinalists in late November and the winner will be announced live on ESPN2's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9.

McAllister did not play in this past Saturday's win over Arkansas State due to a bruised left shoulder suffered in the preseason. McAllister did play against Memphis in the season-opener on Sept. 4 and rushed for 43 yards on seven attempts. He also caught one pass for 15 yards. McAllister currently ranks ninth all-time in rushing at Ole Miss with 1,527 yards (see chart on the right).

Last season, McAllister became the first Rebel rusher since 1950, and just the second in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. His 1,082 rushing yards from last season ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history, behind Kayo Dottley's 1,312 set in 1949.

NASHVILLE REBELS
Ole Miss has four players on its 1999 roster that hail from the Nashville-metropolitan area: Freshman RB Ian Bass (Nash-ville, Tenn./Brentwood Academy H.S.), freshman WR Matt Davenport (Brent-wood, Tenn./High), redshirt freshman WR Ryan Huskey (Brentwood, Tenn./ Brentwood Academy), sophomore OL David Peden (Nashville, Tenn./ Brent-wood Academy).
