* Tonight's captains were: #3 Tim Strickland, #4 Armegis Spearman, #71 Todd Wade, #85 Cory Peterson and #96 Kendrick Clancy.
* Redshirt freshman Ben Claxton at center, and sophomore wide receiver Maurice Flournoy made their first career starts.
* Junior cornerback Ken Lucas also made his first career start.
* Senior cornerback Tim Strickland made his 36th-straight start tonight.
* With his 87 yards passing, junior QB Romaro Miller passed Charlie Conerly and Tim Ellis to move into ninth-place on the Ole Miss career passing list with 2,387 yards.
* The last time the Rebels lost four fumbles in a game was last season at SMU (9/26/98). The game against the Mustangs was also the last time Ole Miss committed five turnovers in a game. In tonight's game versus Memphis, Ole Miss had five turnovers (4 fumbles, 1 interception). The last time the Rebels had more than five turnovers in a game came against Auburn on Sept. 14, 1996,when they had six turnovers (2 fumbles, 4 inteceptions) in a 45-28 loss.
* The Ole Miss defense held Memphis to 0 total yards during the third quarter on 17 offensive plays.
* The Rebel defense held Memphis to only 115 yards of total offense in tonight's game. The last time Ole Miss held an opponent for less than 115 yards total offense was in a 49-7 win over Vanderbilt on Sept. 18, 1993. The Rebels held the Commodores to 51 yards total offense in that game. The last time Ole Miss held an opponent to less than 200 yards total offense was on Sept. 27, 1997, when the Rebels held Vanderbilt to 189 yards of total offense. Ole Miss won that game 15-3.
* Sophomore Joe Gunn gained 114 yards on 25 carries. Gunn's 25 carries were a career-high, besting his previous high of 21 carries vs. Vanderbilt and SMU last season. The 114-yard performance was third 100-yard rushing game of his career. He also gained 100 or more yards vs. Vanderbilt (146 yards) and Arkansas State (122 yards) last year.
* Flournoy caught his first career pass midway through the first quarter for a four-yard pickup from Romaro Miller.
* Redshirt freshman tight end Doug Zeigler recorded his first career reception with a six-yard catch in the second quarter.
* Freshman RB Robert Williams recorded his first career carry, for three yards, in the second quarter. Williams finished the game with eight rushes for 32 yards.
* Prior to tonight's 3-0 win over Memphis, the last time Ole Miss shutout an opponent was Tulane on Nov. 12, 1994, a 38-0 Rebel victory.
* The last time Ole Miss was in a scoreless tie at halftime was Oct. 8, 1988 against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Rebels went on to win that game and upset the 15th-ranked Crimson Tide 22-12. The Rebels were in a scoreless tie with Memphis tonight at the half and went on to win 3-0.
* Junior Les Binkley hit a 40-yard FG on his first career attempt with 7:47 left in the game.
* After tonight's win, Ole Miss is now 78-23-5 in season openers. In the 1990s, the Rebels are 7-3 in season openers. Ole Miss is 26-4-2 in season openers versus Memphis. In the overall series against the Tigers, the Rebels hold a 41-8-2 lead.
* The Rebels have won their last 16 games versus non-conference opponents, including tonight's win over Memphis. Ole Miss' last non-conference loss came on Nov. 5, 1994, with the Rebels falling to the Tigers, 17-16 in Oxford.
* Tonight's 3-0 victory over Memphis was the first in Ole Miss history. Ole Miss did lose a game 3-0 against LSU in 1926.
* David Cutcliffe is the first Ole Miss head coach to win his regular-season debut since Steve Sloan did so in the 1978 season opener. The Rebels won that game, 14-7 over Memphis State on Sept. 9, 1978. Cutcliffe won his head coaching debut at Ole Miss last December, a 35-18 win over Texas Tech in the Sanford Independence Bowl.
