Ole Miss Volleyball Defeats Southern Miss, 3-0

JACKSON, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball squad defeated in-state rival Southern Miss by the score of 15-8, 15-12, 15-11 in Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday. The win improves the Lady Rebels' record to10-9 on the season, while the Lady Eagles drop to 8-11.

The two teams went back and forth, taking turns scoring points in game one, before Ole Miss finally took control and went on to win 15-8. The Lady Rebels jumped out to a 9-4 lead in game two and held off the Lady Eagles to close out game two 15-12. Despite coming out flat in game three, Ole Miss picked up the pace and collected a 15-11 win in game three.

Outside hitters Jaime Burns and Kira Zschau led the way for the Lady Rebels. Burns, a junior from Englewood, Colo., recorded 16 kills, eight digs and six blocks, while Zschau, a senior from Dunedin, Fla., posted 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter Renata Nowacki tallied 40 assists, nine digs and two blocks.

Freshman setter Jade Polonich came off the bench to record 11 digs and two assists, while sophomore Erin Newsom registered eight blocks and three kills. Junior Leigh Rittiner knocked down seven kills and tallied five blocks and fellow junior Abby Hollander collected six kills and two blocks.

The Lady Rebels will return to action on Friday, Oct. 13, when they play at Arkansas.
