OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss baseball inked its fourth signee of the early fall signing period when Billy Porter, of Hattiesburg, Miss., signed a national letter of intent with the Rebels, head coach Mike Bianco announced Tuesday. Porter will be eligible in the 2001-2002 academic year.
Porter, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound catcher, earned All-District honors this past spring for Hattiesburg High School after hitting .390 with two HRs, 38 RBI and recording a team-high 11 triples. He received Hattiesburg's Hustle and Team Leader awards, while helping the Tigers to a 29-9 record and advancing to the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
"We've excited that Billy has decided to sign with us," Bianco said. "Billy is a versatile player that can also play the infield or outfield, as well as catcher. He is also a very well-rounded individual, excelling not only on the baseball field but in the classroom."
Bianco was hired as the Rebels' new head baseball coach on June 7 after spending the past three seasons as the head coach of McNeese State. Bianco was 100-71 in his three seasons at McNeese State and guided the Cowboys to an appearance in the 2000 NCAA Regionals.
Ole Miss finished 30-25 last season to record its third straight 30-win season.
