OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team moved one win closer to qualifying for the SEC Championships by defeating arch-rival Mississippi State 5-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-8 on Friday night at the Gillom Sports Center. The win improves the Lady Rebels' record to 14-13 overall and 4-8 in the SEC, while the Bulldogs fall to 14-13 overall and 1-11 in the conference.
The Lady Rebels used a balance attack in defeating Mississippi State on Senior Night as four Lady Rebels recorded 10 or more kills. Senior Kira Zschau led Ole Miss in both kills with 12 and digs with 19. Sophomore Erin Newsom also collected 12 kills, while also posting seven digs and four blocks.
Juniors Jaime Burns and Leigh Rittiner both tallied 11 kills a piece. Burns recorded six digs, while Rittiner registered seven blocks. Junior Abby Hollander was not far behind as she tallied nine kills and three blocks.
Senior setter Renata Nowacki had another strong performance as she assisted on 50 kills and had 17 digs.
"It was a great way to go out," said Nowacki. "It was very exciting for both Kira and I to get a win in our last home match. Now we need to just keep putting wins together so we can make it to the conference tournament."
Ole Miss will travel to Starkville, Miss., on Sunday to again take on the Bulldogs. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
