Lady Rebels Drop A Close One To Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team dropped another heartbreaker, this time at the hands of arch-rival Mississippi State. The Lady Rebels were defeated by the Bulldogs, 15-13, 1015, 9-15, 15-9, 4-15. The loss drops Ole Miss to 14-14 overall and 4-9 in SEC play, while Mississippi State moves to 15-13 overall and 2-11 in conference action.

Ole Miss got down 7-0 in game one before clawing their way back into the game. The Lady Rebels pulled ahead 11-9 behind the strong serving of freshman Jade Polonich and then pulled out a 15-13 win over the Bulldogs in game one. In game two, the two teams traded points before Mississippi State pulled ahead 11-10. Tanika Taylor served for four straight points to take game two for the Bulldogs and tie the match at 1-1.

Ole Miss again found itself in a deep whole in game three, falling behind 6-0 in the early stages of the game. The Lady Rebels regrouped and surged back to find themselves down by only one at 7-6. Mississippi State then went to work and took game three 15-9. Game four was again a back and forth battle with Mississippi State forging an 8-5 lead before Ole Miss came charging back to defeat the Bulldogs 15-9 behind four straight serves by Jaime Burns.

The two teams moved into the rally scored game five knotted at 2-2. With Mississippi State leading 6-4, Bulldog freshman Jennifer Hadden served for nine straight points, giving Mississippi State the game five win and the match.

Senior outside hitter Kira Zschau led the Lady Rebels with 16 kills and 22 digs. Junior outside hitter Jaime Burns recorded 14 kills and 15 digs. Junior right-side hitter Leigh Rittiner collected eight kills and four blocks.

Senior setter Renata Nowacki assisted on 44 kills and also had nine digs and two blocks, while sophomore defensive specialist Erica Tricco tallied 11 digs.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday, November 10, at 7 p.m., when they travel to Auburn.
