OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team defeated Northern Arizona, 55-47, on Sunday, behind senior Becky Myatt's 12 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Rebels fell behind 27-24 at halftime, but stepped up their defensive intensity in the second half to hold off the Lumberjacks.
"We knew we would have to play smart to win today," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "We played well down the stretch. We took advantage of some opportunities and were fortunate to win this one."
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 10-4 lead behind Myatt's driving lay-ups, but then lost their momentum and allowed Northern Arizona to go into the intermission with a three-point lead. Juniors Saundra Jackson and TaShondrea Moton led the Lady Rebels second half attack as Jackson scored all 11 of her points in the second period and Moton had seven of her career-high nine rebounds after the break.
"Becky played really hard on both sides of the ball today,"said Aldy. "She has that 'never say die' attitude and the team fed off that today."
Myatt's 12 points led the Lady Rebels. Moton chipped in nine points and freshman Tywanna Inmon added eight points off the bench. Moton led Ole Miss in rebounding with nine caroms, followed by Myatt with eight boards and Jackson with seven rebounds.
Ole Miss was held to below 40 percent shooting for the first time this season as they shot 37.3 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from the three-point line. The Lady Rebels made 9-of-15 free throws and outrebounded the Lumberjacks 44-39.
Northern Arizona was led by junior Kara Kleinhenz with 14 points and junior Anna Sturing with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Lumberjacks shot 34.4 percent from the field, including a dismal 18.8 percent from the three-point line.
Ole Miss will travel to Long Beach, Calif., to play in the Beach Classic, Dec. 19-20. The Lady Rebels will take on Wichita State in the first round at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday.
