Ole Miss Holds Off Nicholls State 9-6

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss jumped out to an 8-0 lead and then held on to defeat Nicholls State 9-6 Sunday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field as junior RHP Justin Huisman broke the school's career record for saves. With the win, the Rebels took two-of-three from the Colonels this weekend.
Huisman pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his first save of the season and the 14th of his career to break Skipper Wright's career mark of 13.
Ole Miss (2-1) out-hit Nicholls State (2-2) 17-9 as six different Rebels recorded two hits or more. Junior Sim Shanks and sophomore Banks Robinson led the Ole Miss attack with three hits each and both also drove in two runs.
Junior Lance Jones, a junior college transfer, went 2-for-2 in his Ole Miss debut, including hitting a lead-off home run in the fourth to give the Rebels an 8-0 lead.
Senior RHP Joey Cramblitt (1-0) pitched five shutout innings and held the Colonels to one hit.
Nicholls State battled back with four runs in the seventh to cut the Ole Miss lead to 8-4. Rondon Anderson's two-run double scored the Colonels' first runs of the game. Brad Dantonio added an RBI triple, and Kevin Larpenter followed with an RBI single to score Dantonio.
Ole Miss got a run in the bottom of the seventh when Banks Robinson scored on an error on a Kris Cox single. The error was one of three on the day for Nicholls State which led to two unearned runs.
Anderson, who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, cut the Rebels' lead to 9-6 with a two-run single in the eighth.
David Bourg (1-1) was charged with the loss after being tagged for seven earned runs on 12 hits in his three innings of work.
Ole Miss will continue its seven-game homestand next Thursday against Abilene Christian at 3:00 p.m., before Louisiana Tech comes into Oxford next weekend for a three-game series starting next Friday at 3:00 p.m.
