OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss baseball team begins a four-day stretch of home games on Thursday as the Rebels take on Abilene Christian. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Oxford- University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Ole Miss (2-1) plays one game with ACU before hosting a three-game homestand with Louisiana Tech Friday through Sunday. The Rebels took two of three from Nicholls State in their season-opening series last weekend. Senior first baseman Jude Voltz hit .500 for the series with a homer, double and three RBI. Hurlers Jeff McAvoy and Joey Cramblitt picked up wins for UM, and Justin Huisman earned his school-record 14th career save.
Sophomore lefthander Casey Fuller will be making his Ole Miss debut on Thursday. A transfer from Sacramento City Community College, Fuller was a 25th round selection of the Montreal Expos in 1998.
Abilene Christian (8-0) enters Thursday's matchup ranked 12th in the nation in NCAA Division II. Through their first eight games, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 104-16, led by junior shortstop Jeremy Smith and his .571 average, three homers and 15 RBI. Taking the mound for ACU will be senior righthander Jarrod Cross, who is 1-0 and yet to allow an earned run in seven innings of work this year.
"Abilene Christian has an outstanding team," said Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison. "They have been one of the top teams in Division II for some time. ACU is a well-coached club and should provide quite a test for us this early in the season."
Thursday will be Senior Citizen's Day at Oxford-University Stadium. Everyone over the age of 65 gets in the game for free. Game one with Louisiana Tech on Friday is Business Card Day. Fans can receive one free ticket with a business card.
