Box Score

OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman forward Kayla Madewell, a Farmington, Ark., native, scored a career-high 19 points including five three-pointers to lead Ole Miss to a 78-63 win over Arkansas on senior day, Sunday afternoon at Tad Smith Colsieum. After coming close several times, the Lady Rbels finally earned their first SEC victory of the year.

The win marked the third straight over Arkansas and several Lady Rebels stepped up to make it happen. Junior guard Becky Myatt had an outstanding game with 17 points (four threes), six rebounds and seven assists. Senior Frankie Boyd chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, while junior Chandra Dorsey added 10 points, a career-best nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.

"For our kids, I'm so excited," head coach Ron Aldy said. "They've worked so hard this year, and had so many close games. This was our best effort of the year. Everything we did today we put our heart and soul into it. We had people step up. To be able to win one going into the tournament is nice. We had a total team effort, and it came at a good time.

"I think Kayla wanted to prove something today," Aldy added. "It really showed something to be able to step up against a team she wanted to play her best against. She really made them pay in terms of spreading out the defense."

The Lady Rebels jumped on Arkansas early getting out to an 8-0 lead. The Lady'Backs finally scored at the 15:11 mark on India Lewis' three-pointer to make it 8-3. Arkansas then went on an 11-2 run to go ahead 14-10 with 12:27 left in the first half. They led until the 1:41 mark when two free throws by Stephanie Murphy put Ole Miss up 32-31.

Four free-throws by Dorsey and a three-pointer from Madewell with 24 seconds remaining in the half, gave the Lady Rebels a six point advantage, but Arkansas' Lewis sank a three with eight seconds left to make it 39-36 at halftime.

Ole Miss came out strong in the second half and built a 12-point lead (61-49) with 12:48 to go in the game on another three by Madewell. Arkansas cut it to seven with eight minutes left, on two consecutive steals that resulted in layups, but that was as close as they would get.

"I am just happy we won the game," Madewell said. "It's special for me to play well against Arkansas, but it isn't everything. I want to win the game more. The whole team stepped up and played great. Hopefully this will give us some confidence going into the SEC Tournament."

Arkansas was led by Lewis, who scored 17 points and hit five three-pointers. Karyn Karlin added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady'Backs, who shot 42.3 percent for the game.

The Lady Rebels shot 40.3 percent from the floor, including 43.5 from behind the arc on 10-of-23 three-pointers. They also outrebounded Arkansas 48-34.

Ole Miss now gets ready for the upcoming SEC Tournament March 2-5 at the McKenzie Arena in Chattagnooga, Tenn. The Lady Rebels (seeded No. 12) will face arch-rival and fifth- seeded Mississippi State in the first round Thursday at 7:00 p.m. EST.
