OXFORD, Miss. - Seven games in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, including a Thanksgiving Night ESPN telecast, await Coach David Cutcliffe's Ole Miss Rebels in 2000, it was announced Wednesday by Athletic Director John Shafer.
Ole Miss will play four of its first five games at home, beginning on Sept. 2 against the Tulane Green Wave. Other games on the Oxford campus will be against Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas State, Nevada-Las Vegas, LSU, and Mississippi State. Road trips will be to Vanderbilt, Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia.
For the third year in a row, ESPN will telecast the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game on Thanksgiving. "This gives us a chance to showcase our program and the State of Mississippi on national TV," Shafer said.
"We feel like this is an attractive home schedule," Shafer added. "It's exciting to know we'll have seven opportunities for our fans to return to campus, experience The Grove tradition on game day, and then watch the Rebels play."
Kentucky replaces South Carolina as an SEC opponent, while Nevada-Las Vegas replaces the University of Memphis as a non-conference foe.
The only first time opponent on the 2000 slate is UNLV, which will provide Homecoming opposition for the Rebels on Oct. 28.
Ole Miss compiled an 8-4 record last season, including a 27-25 Sanford Independence Bowl victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, and finished the year ranked No. 22 in the national polls.
The Rebels are the only team in the Southeastern Conference Western Division to play in three straight bowl games. Prior to the 1999 victory over Oklahoma, Ole Miss defeated Marshall in the 1997 Motor City Bowl and Texas Tech in the 1998 Independence Bowl.
