OXFORD, Miss. - Senior left-hander Jamie Bennett pitched his first complete game of the year and Chris Burke had four RBI as Tennessee defeated Ole Miss 12-2 Friday night in the first game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
Trailing 2-1, Tennessee took advantage of two Rebel errors to score four unearned runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. A two-out error by Clint Farrar off the bat of Ryan Case, allowed Jeff Christensen to score from third and tie the score at 2-2. Following the error, the Volunteers strung together three straight hits, including a RBI double by Burke and a two-run single by Kris Bennett.
Tennessee added to its advantage with a run in the sixth and put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh. Burke and John Massey both had two-run doubles to spark the Volunteers' big seventh inning.
Ole Miss scored two runs off Bennett in the first inning but were unable to push any more across despite Bennett allowing a season-high four walks. For the game, the Rebels stranded 10 runners on base.
Bennett (6-1) held Ole Miss to six hits and struck out five.
Jeff McAvoy (4-2) allowed six runs, though only two were earned, in six innings of work while suffering his first loss at home since April 4, 1998 against South Carolina.
Kris Bennett went 3-for-6 to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, and Massey was 3-for-5 as the Volunteers out-hit the Rebels 18-6.
Jude Voltz went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Ole Miss, and Chad Hill went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to a career best 11 games.
The two teams will play game two Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
