Softball Splits Double-Header

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Rebel softball team salvaged the final game of the four game series against Mississippi State with a 6-0 victory as pitcher Holly Burris tossed a three-hit shutout.

With the win, Ole Miss improves to 13-20 and 1-3 in the Southeastern Conference while the Bulldogs drop to 23-8 overall and 3-1 in the SEC.

In the second game, Ole Miss put up two runs in the fourth when Kaci Coffee and Heather Swinney scored. Burris picked up an RBI with a single in the two-run fourth.

The Rebels added to their lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. Phyllis Manley and Jamie Cummings singled to start the inning. After a bunt single by Amanda Lehotak loaded the bases with one out, Jessica Hamilton singled to center to bring in Audra Wadsworth, who pinch ran for Manley, and Cummings.

Coffee then singled to center to score Lehotak and Hamilton for the final runs of the innings.

Burris notched her sixth win of the season with a three-hit gem. The Bulldogs did not get a batter on base until relief pitcher Jennifer Pursell singled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Burris fanned a season-high seven batters in the game.

In game one, the Rebels loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first. Kaci Coffee was hit by a pitch to bring in Amanda Lehotak for a 1-0 lead, but the Bulldogs retired the next two batters to end the scoring threat.

Mississippi State then put up a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead.

The game winning run for the Bulldogs came in the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied 1-1. Ole Miss pitcher Brittany Maxey retired the first two batters of the inning, but gave up consecutive singles to Keri McCallum and Jenny Henke to put runners on first and third.

Lindsey Price came in to relieve Maxey and gave up a single to Kellie Wilkerson to bring in McCallum for the game-winner.

Bulldog pitcher Jennifer Pursell retired the Rebels in order in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the win.

Ole Miss will travel to Athens, Ga., and Columbia, S.C., to take the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks next weekend.
