McAvoy Shuts Out Vanderbilt 4-0

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss starter Jeff McAvoy pitched a four-hit shutout, and shortstop Justin Huisman blasted a two-run home run to earn the Rebels a 4-0 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores Friday night in front of 1,124 at Oxford-University Stadium / Swayze Field.
McAvoy went the distance in recording his first complete game of the season, allowing four hits and three walks, and striking out five.
"Jeff pitched an excellent game tonight," said head coach Pat Harrison. "He did a good job of hitting his spots, and he provided a big boost for the team."
The Rebels (14-9, 3-3 SEC) posted a pair of back-to-back two-run innings highlighted by Huisman's home run in the fourth. It was Huisman's fourth on the season.
Ole Miss' only other runs came in the bottom of the fifth when Kris Cox singled to drive in Lance Jones and Clint Farrar.
Commodore starter Andy Beal also went the distance in the loss. Beal (2-4) tossed a career-long eight innings, allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
The win also marked the 100th career victory for Harrison as head coach of the Rebels.
Vanderbilt falls to 10-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
