Rebel Bats Come to Life in 8-5 Win

4/1/2000 | Baseball

Clint Farrar and Lance Jones recorded three hits each to pace Ole Miss' 16-hit attack as the Rebels downed Kentucky 8-5 Saturday afternoon to even the weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series.

All nine Ole Miss (17-12, 5-5 SEC) starters recorded at least one hit each in the victory, including a home run from Burney Hutchinson. Hutchinson's lead-off solo home run in the seventh sparked a four-run inning for the Rebels to break open a 4-3 game. It was Hutchinson's third home run of the weekend, and his third of the season.

Freshman right-hander Brett Young (2-0) went five innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk, while striking out three.

Justin Huisman pitched the final two innings to earn his seventh save. He entered the game in the eighth after Kentucky (23-6, 4-6 SEC) had scored a run to cut the lead to 8-4 and had the bases loaded with one out. Huisman stemmed the Wildcat rally by striking out Robert Newton and getting Vince Harrison to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Wildcats added another run in the ninth on Beau Moore's RBI double to score Seth Morris. Moore went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Kentucky.

Kentucky starter Scott Wade (5-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits and four strikeouts.
