Ole Miss Powers Past Austin Peay

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss blasted three home runs in the fifth inning as the Rebels downed the Governors of Austin Peay 9-4 Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

Ole Miss (27-18) was down 3-2 when Lance Jones started the home run derby off with a two-run shot over the left field fence. After a pitching change, Burney Hutchinson followed up with a solo shot, and two batters later, Justin Huisman put the Rebels up by 7-3 with a two-run blast to left.

The inning marked the third time in the last four games that Ole Miss has homered three times in an inning.

Austin Peay (22-23) got on the scoreboard first with one run in the first, but the Rebels bounced back with a quick two runs to take the lead, 2-1 after one. The Governors tied the game with a run in the third, and took a 3-2 lead with a single run in the fifth before the Rebels took control with their five-run burst in the bottom of the fifth.

Freshman Matthew Miller (2-0) got the win for the Rebels, working a season-long 6 1/3 innings. The Brandon, Miss., native gave up four runs on five hits and four walks, and struck out four.

Brett Young picked up his second save of the year, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings.

Klint Rommel (0-1), the third of nine Austin Peay was charged with the loss. He allowed two runs on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.

Clint Farrar and Jude Voltz led the Rebels in hitting, both going 2-for-3 on the night. Voltz drove in one run to give him 10 RBI in the last four games. Farrar extended his career-best hitting streak to eight games, while Kris Cox singled in the eighth inning to push his career-best hitting streak to 13 games.

Lance Wampler went 1-for-4 for the Governors to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, and Frank Kunich was 1-for-3 to move his hitting streak to 16 games.

The Rebels will next face Southeastern Conference Western-foe LSU in a three-game home series this weekend in Oxford. Game one is Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
