LSU Takes Series Opener From Ole Miss 12-6

OXFORD, Miss. - LSU took advantage of a seven-run sixth inning to beat Ole Miss 12-6 in the first game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field.

With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, Mike Fontenot drove in two runs on a single down the left field line. A Brad Hawpe RBI-single coupled with a Rebel fielding error put two more runs on the board for the Tigers. Hawpe then scored on a Cedrick Harris sacrifice fly. Ray Wright dropped in a two-run double to give the Tigers an 8-1 lead and drive out Rebel starter Jeff McAvoy.

Ole Miss (27-19, 9-12 SEC) notched three runs in the seventh on a pair of home runs. Jude Voltz sent a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence, and Banks Robinson followed suit with a two-run homer to narrow the LSU lead to 8-4.

The Rebels managed to pick up two more runs in the eighth, but left runners on the corners, stranding the tying run on first base.

LSU (34-13, 14-7) tacked on four insurance runs in the ninth to solidify the 12-6 win.

Tiger starter Hunter Gomez (7-0) picked up the win, pitching 7 2/3 innings striking out six while giving up six runs on as many hits.

McAvoy (7-4) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Liberto came in for 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.

LSU out-hit the 15-7. Right fielder Wright led the Tigers going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Hawpe, who also collected three hits, tied LSU's single-season double record with his 27th.

For Ole Miss, Robinson went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Rebels in hitting. Kris Cox picked up two hits to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games.

With the loss and Kentucky's win, the Rebels remain a 1/4 of a game ahead of UK in the race for the eighth spot in the SEC Tournament. The Rebels and Tigers will square off Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series.
