OXFORD, Miss. - LSU starter Bo Pettit allowed one run and struck out 12 in seven innings of work as the Tigers pounced on Ole Miss 9-2 Sunday in the deciding game of the three-game Southeastern Conference series at Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field.
Pettit (4-3), whose 12 strikeouts sets a team season-high, held the Rebels to five hits and walked three in earning the win.
Leading 1-0, LSU took advantage of a Matthew Miller two-out throwing error to take a 3-0 lead. Miller's errant throw to first off the bat of Jeff Lipari put runners on second and third, and Jeremy Witten followed with a two-run single.
LSU (35-14, 15-8 SEC) added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to build an 8-1 lead.
The Tigers out-hit the Rebels 11-7, as Brad Hawpe and Witten both went 2-for-4 with three RBI a piece.
Kris Cox and Carl Lafferty recorded two hits each for the Rebels (28-20, 10-13 SEC). Lafferty also hit his sixth home run of the year with a solo shot in the fourth to make it 3-1. Cox extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games.
Miller (2-1) was charged with his first loss of the season. He went four innings, giving up four runs on three hits and striking out three.
Ole Miss' next game will be at home against Arkansas-Little Rock Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in a make-up game for one of the Rebels' two rain outs this season. Season tickets will be honored at the gate, or otherwise, admission will be $1.
