OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Jeff McAvoy struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings to guide the Ole Miss Rebels past the 10th ranked Auburn Tigers Friday night in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series, in front of 1,757 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
McAvoy (6-2) kept the SEC's top run-scoring team in check, giving up only three runs, all of which came on solo-home runs, and scattered 11 hits en route to earning the win. His nine strikeouts were one shy of his career high.
Dominic Rich's home run put Auburn up 1-0 in the third, but the Rebels would take the lead with three runs in the fourth. Jude Voltz's RBI single tied the game at 1-1. Ole Miss then took a 3-1 lead when two runs scored on a two-out throwing error by pitcher Levale Speigner off the bat of Lance Jones.
Mailon Kent cut the Ole Miss lead to 3-2 with his home run in the fifth, before Burney Hutchinson pushed the lead back to 5-2 with a two-run home run. The home run was the fourth of the year for Hutchinson.
Gabe Gross hit the third of Auburn's home run in the seventh to make it 6-3.
Clint Farrar and Carl Lafferty gave Ole Miss some insurance with RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth for the 8-3 final.
Gross went 4-for-5 to lead Auburn at the plate as the Tigers out-hit the Rebels 12-11.
Banks Robinson led Ole Miss with a 3-for-4 performance. Hutchinson, Lafferty and Voltz also had two hits each.
Speigner (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks.
Freshman Brett Young (2-0) is scheduled to take the mound in the second game of the SEC Western Division series tomorrow. The start time of tomorrow's game has been moved to 1:30 p.m.
