OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss seniors Joey Cramblitt and Jude Voltz have been named to the GTE Academic All-District VI baseball team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.
Eleven players were selected to the District VI team, which includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. Ole Miss, Baylor, and Rice each had two players selected to the squad.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with a grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.0 scale) for his career and have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible for nomination.
Cramblitt and Voltz, along with the other nine selections from District VI, will appear on the national Academic All-America ballot. The 2000 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball Team will be announced June 6.
"This is a great honor for these two outstanding student-athletes," said Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison. "Both are very deserving of this recognition, and they both fit the definition of what it means to be a true student-athlete."
Cramblitt, a right-handed pitcher from Meridian, Miss., has a 3.84 GPA while majoring in both Banking & Finance and Managerial Finance. He has been part of the Rebels' weekend rotation this season, posting a 4-8 mark with a 5.25 ERA in 73.2 innings pitched. For his career, Cramblitt is 18-13 with a 5.26 ERA in 53 appearances, including 31 starts.
Voltz, a senior first baseman from Metairie, La., is a Criminal Justice major with a 3.56 cumulative GPA. He has started all 52 games for the Rebels this season, and is hitting .322. Voltz leads Ole Miss in nearly every offensive category, including doubles (17), home runs (11), and RBI (45). Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies out of Jesuit High School in 1996, and by the Pittsburgh Pirates in last year's Major League Baseball Draft, Voltz will finish his four-year career at Ole Miss ranked in the top 10 in doubles, total bases, hits, home runs and RBI.
Ole Miss is 29-23 on the year and 11-15 in the Southeastern Conference. The Rebels hold a half-game lead over Tennessee for the eighth and final spot for next week's SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. Ole Miss will play host to Arkansas this weekend, while Tennessee must travel to No. 1 ranked South Carolina.
Game one between the Rebels and Razorbacks will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will also play at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday and 1:30 p.m., on Sunday. Sunday's game will be televised by College Sports Southeast.
