Arkansas Wins Series Opener 6-1

OXFORD, Miss. - The Arkansas Razorbacks jumped out to 5-0 lead after the third inning on their way to defeating Ole Miss 6-1 in the series opener Friday at Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field.
Arkansas (23-29,7-19 SEC) picked up their first two runs in the second, the final run on a Jeff Fletcher double to right center. In the third, a Brian Kirby two-run home run gave the Razorbacks a 5-0 lead.
Arkansas picked up another run in the eighth on a Bryan King solo-home run to extend their lead to 6-0.
Ole Miss (29-24,11-16 SEC) got its only run of the game in the eighth on a RBI sacrifice fly by Carl Lafferty.
Arkansas out hit the Rebels 13-9. Leading the hitting attack was Fletcher, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Kirby's home run was the 30th of his career, tying him for seventh-place on Arkansas' career home run list.
Razorback starter Wes McCrotty (1-6) recorded the win allowing just the one run on nine hits in seven innings of work.
For the Rebels, senior Jeff McAvoy (7-6) was charged with the loss, giving up six runs on six hits and striking out five in 7 1/3 innings.
Second baseman Clint Farrar led the Rebels in hitting going 3-for-4 on the night.
The win was the first of the year for Arkansas against an SEC Western Division team. Despite the loss, Ole Miss remained a ? game ahead of Tennessee for the eighth and final spot to the SEC Tournament in Birmingham, as South Carolina defeated the Volunteers 14-3 in Columbia. Kentucky also closed to within a ? game of Ole Miss as the Wildcats were 9-5 winners over Vanderbilt in Nashville.
The second game of the series is set for a 6:30 p.m., start time Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
