BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior Daya Hampton finished her Ole Miss track career with a personal best score in the women 's heptathlon, finishing eighth and scoring the first Lady Rebel point of the SEC Outdoor Championships Friday evening. The Lady Rebel trio of Teneeshia Jones, Brandy Mack and Chika Chuku each qualified for their event finals.
Jones broke her own school record to win her heat of the 200 meters to finish third overall in the preliminaries.
Her time of 23.13 ranks ninth in the NCAA this season and 16th in the world this year.
Chuku won her heat of the 800 meters and finished qualified for the finals in third place.
In winning her heat, she defeated defending SEC Outdoor Champion Claudine Williams of LSU, who is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA.
Last season, Chuku finished third behind Williams and Tamieka Grizzle of Florida, who also qualified for the finals. Mack was the third Lady Rebel to win her heat in the preliminaries Friday.
She qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles, after finishing third last season. The Lady Rebels were not the only ones who performed well for Ole Miss on Friday.
Freshman Stacy Andrews broke his own school record in the hammer throw to qualify for the finals, but finished just out of the points with a ninth place finish.
Scott Thompson and Dominik Fuhrmann both had personal bests in preliminaries of the 800 meters, but failed to qualify for the finals.
At press time, the final standings of the men's 200 meters had not been released due to some technical difficulties, but Savante Stringfellow finished third in his heat and could have qualified for the finals, with the top two from each heat automatically qualifying and the top five overall remaining times also qualifying. The real competition for Stringfellow, a junior from Jackson, Miss., is Saturday, when he squares off against two of the top six long jumpers in the nation this year.
The defending SEC Outdoor long jump champion is currently ranked second in the SEC and the NCAA and tied for third in the world this season.
He is second only to Melvin Lister of Arkansas, whom he has defeated in two-of-three competitions this season.
