DURHAM, NC - Junior Savante Stringfellow, from Provine High School in Jackson, Miss., captured the NCAA long jump title with a leap of 26-feet, 9.75 inches Wednesday evening at Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.

With his victory in the long jump, Stringfellow became the Rebels' first NCAA outdoor national champion since 1991 when George Kersh won the 800 meters. He is the third Ole Miss athlete in school history to win an NCAA outdoor title. Ralph Spry was the other, also winning the long jump back in 1983.

The 2000 United States indoor champion in the long jump, Stringfellow entered the NCAA meet ranked fourth in the world in the event. A member of the 1999 US Pan American Games and World Championship teams, Stringfellow has qualified for the 2000 US Olympic Trials for the Sydney Games that will be held later this year in September.

Also competing on Wednesday, junior Teneeshia Jones qualified for Friday night's semifinals of the women's 200-meter dash. Jones finished second in her heat and recorded the day's third-best time with at 23.21 seconds.

Sophomore Brandy Mack ran in the 400-meter hurdle semifinals Wednesday but just missed qualifying for Friday's finals with a time of 58.18 to finish 10th overall as the top eight times advanced.

Jones and junior Tisha Parker will be competing in Thursday's second day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jones will be running in the women's 100-meter preliminaries and Parker will be competing in the women's long jump.
