Stringfellow, Parker, Jones To Compete In Olympic Trials

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss' Savante' Stringfellow, Tisha Parker and Teneeshia Jones all begin their quest for Olympic gold at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, which begin on Friday, July 14 in Sacramento, Calif. The trials, which run through July 23, will have more than 1,200 athletes competing in 39 separate events to determine the U.S. roster for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Former Rebel track and field standout Greg Saddler will also compete in the trials.

"This is a 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity for Savante', Tisha and Teneeshia," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "It's an outstanding honor for them to compete in the trials against the best track and field athletes in the world. All three are great athletes in their own right, and for them to be just one step away from participating in the Olympics, it is truly a remarkable accomplishment.

"Savante', Tisha and Teneeshia have continued to train hard throughout the summer. I know they will do the best they possibly can, and will represent Ole Miss well at the trials."

Jones will be the first Ole Miss athlete to compete, as the first round of the women's 100-meter dash will take place at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday. The semifinals of the 100 meters will be held on Saturday, July 15 at 5:45 p.m. (CT), with the finals to follow at 7:30 p.m. (CT). The Shannon, Miss., native, who is a four-time All-America, holds the Ole Miss school record in 100 meters at 11.24 seconds.

Parker will also begin competition on Friday in the women's long jump. The women's long jump qualifying round starts at 9:30 p.m. (CT), with the finals to be held on Sunday, July 16 at 2:00 p.m. (CT). Parker, who is >from Houston, Texas, holds the school's long jump record at 21-4 1/4 and finished seventh in the long jump at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Stringfellow, a Jackson, Miss., native, begins his quest for a spot on the Olympic team in the men's long jump qualifying round on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. (CT). The finals are set for Monday, July 17 at 9:30 p.m. (CT). The 2000 NCAA Outdoor long jump champion is a three-time All-America, and has also won the 2000 U.S. indoor long jump title and the 1999 Southeastern Conference outdoor long jump championship.

The action on Saturday, July 22 turns back to Jones, who will also compete in the 200-meter dash. Jones, who holds the Ole Miss record in the event at 23.14 seconds, runs in the 200 meters first round on July 22 at 12:50 p.m. (CT), with the semifinals and finals on Sunday, July 23 at 5:40 p.m. and 7:35 p.m. (CT), respectively.

Saddler, who set the school record in the 100 meters at 10.11 seconds in 1994, begins competition in 100 meters on Friday, July 14 at 8:00 p.m. (CT). The semifinals and finals are set for Saturday, July 15 at 6:00 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. (CT).

NBC will televise portions of the Olympic Trials July 15-16 and 22-23. NBC will broadcast live coverage of the trials on July 15 from 7-8 p.m. (CT) and July 16 from 3-5 p.m. (CT). The following weekend (July 22-23), NBC will air coverage on July 22 from 12-2 p.m. (CT) and July 23 from 6-8 p.m. (CT).
