SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ole Miss' Savante' Stringfellow fell short in his quest to compete in the 2000 Olympic Games late Monday night, finishing fifth in long jump finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials held at Hornet Stadium.
Stringfellow's best mark in the finals was a jump of 26-4 ?, which was three inches shy of third place. Arkansas' Melvin Lister placed first with a jump of 27-3 3/4, followed by Dwight Phillips (26-8 ?) and Walter Davis (26-7 1/4). Lister, Phillips and Davis will represent the U.S. team in the long jump at the 2000 Olympic Games, which will be held in Sydney, Australia, in September.
"We are a little disappointed, but this takes nothing away from what Savante' has accomplished," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Savante' is a tremendous athlete who has many years of competition ahead of him. He has learned a great deal from this incredible experience at the trials, and I'm sure he'll continue to train hard for his final year at Ole Miss and for future international meets to come."
Stringfellow, a rising senior at Ole Miss, placed second in the long jump qualifying round on Saturday with a mark of 26-10 ?. The top 12 qualifiers from Saturday's competition advanced to Monday's finals.
The Jackson, Miss., native won the 2000 NCAA long jump title in early June. Last year, Stringfellow competed at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), and the World Championships in Seville, Spain, as a member of the U.S. Track and Field squad.
