OXFORD, Miss. - Junior right-handed pitcher Pete Montrenes has transferred to Ole Miss from Southern California, first-year Rebel head baseball coach Mike Bianco announced Monday. Montrenes will be eligible immediately for Ole Miss under college baseball's one-time transfer rule.
A native of Fountain Valley, Calif., Montrenes, 6-feet-3, 190 pounds, went 5-1, with two saves, recorded a 5.87 ERA (79.2 IP, 52 ER) and struck out 80 in 49 appearances during his two seasons with the Trojans. As a freshman in 1999, Montrenes appeared in 24 games, making three starts, and was 2-0 with a 5.77 ERA (39.0 IP, 25 ER) and fanned 40. This past spring, Montrenes recorded a 3-1 record with a 5.98 ERA (40.2 IP, 27 ER) and struck out 40 in 25 appearances, including four starts, as a member of the Trojans' College World Series team.
"We feel fortunate to have a pitcher like Pete be able to join us for our first year here," Bianco said. "He's got valuable big-time Division I and College World Series experience. He's a great addition to our staff and is someone we vision being an SEC starter."
Montrenes pitched this summer for the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod League where he was a teammate of current Rebel junior outfielder Kris Cox. In 10 appearances, including five starts, Montrenes was 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA (47.1 IP, 17 ER) and was fourth in the Cape Cod League in strikeouts with 61. He was the winning pitcher in the A's 6-2 victory over Orleans in the division play-in game.
