Ole Miss Volleyball Defeats Arkansas State 3-1

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Ole Miss volleyball team came back from losing the first game against Arkansas State, to win the next three for a 3-1 win over the Lady Indians at the Convocation Center Tuesday night. With the win, the Lady Rebels snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 5-10 overall, while ASU dropped to 6-7 on the year.
Senior Jaime Burns recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 19 kills and 15 digs, to lead the Lady Rebels. Erin Newsom finished with 10 kills on 20 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage on the night. She also chipped in six digs and five block assists. Sophomore setter Jade Polonich tied her career-best with 15 digs in the win.
Arkansas State's Katie Silliman led the Lady Indians with 17 kills on 37 total attempts and .351. Michal Evers notched a double-double of 16 kills and 12 digs on the night.
Game one stayed close with Arkansas State holding a four-point lead throughout. The game was tied at 20-20, before ASU went on a 10-4 run the rest of the way for a 30-24 win. Ole Miss hit just .167, while Arkansas State hit .307 behind Silliman's seven kills.
Ole Miss tied the match taking game two 30-27. The Lady Rebels held a 27-23 lead, but Arkansas State won three consecutive points to get within one (27-26). Ole Miss won three of the final four points to close it out.
The Lady Rebels took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning game three 30-25 behind the play of Erin Newsom and Leigh Rittiner. Newsom had seven kills on 13 attempts for .462 hitting percentage, while Rittiner tallied five kills on 11 attacks. Ole Miss held a 23-21 lead and then used a 6-2 run to make it 29-23. Arkansas State staved off two game points, before the Lady Rebels shut the door.
In game four, Arkansas State jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but Ole Miss would answer and eventually take the lead. They never relinquished it going on to take a 30-22 win and clinch the match.
The Lady Rebels will continue a five-match road trip with nationally-ranked Florida on Friday in Gainesville. That match is slated for 8 p.m. CT. On Sunday, Ole Miss will travel to Georgia for a 1 p.m. match.
