Davis, Mullins To Receive National Football Foundation Awards

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will honor Reed Davis with its Distinguished American Award and Leroy Mullins with its Contribution to Amateur Football Award here Saturday night prior to the Ole Miss-Arkansas game in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:06 on ESPN2.
The Distinguished American Award is presented annually by the Ole Miss Chapter to individuals who have carried the lessons learned on the football field into a life of service to his community, while the Contribution to Amateur Football Award is given in honor of those who have made numerous contributions to the college athletic world through a lifetime of service to their fellowman.
"We are pleased to honor these two men for their many contributions to Ole Miss athletics," said Frank Crosthwait of Indianola, Miss., president of the Ole Miss Chapter. "They are most deserving of this recognition and it is especially gratifying since they currently work in the athletic department."
A native of Morton, Miss., and a 1964 Ole Miss graduate, Davis currently serves as Associate Athletic Director for Finance and is responsible for all budgetary matters of the Rebel athletic department. He has been employed by the University since 1968.
Davis played football for Coach John Vaught's Rebels as an offensive and defensive end, and was a member of two Sugar Bowl teams and a Cotton Bowl team. He earned three letters while helping Ole Miss to a 25-1-2 record on the way to two SEC titles. The 1962 squad went 10-0 and earned a share of the national championship.
Davis is a member of the Friends of North Mississippi Retardation Center and the Collegiate Athletic Business Managers Association. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Protection and Advocacy Board.
A native of Natchez, Miss., and a 1965 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Mullins is in his 27th year at Ole Miss and currently serves as Director of Sports Medicine, having joined the Rebel staff on February 1, 1975 as athletic trainer. His involvement in athletic training dates back to 1957, his freshman year at Natchez High School. From there he has worked at Southwest Junior College, Eastern Kentucky, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Ole Miss.
In 1993, Mullins was inducted into Eastern Kentucky's Hall of Distinguished Alumni. In 1994, he received the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award at the National Athletic Trainers' Association Convention, and in 1996 received his profession's most coveted award, the Tim Kerin Award for Excellence in Athletic Training
He teaches in the University's Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Management and is also on staff at the University Medical School in Jackson. Leroy is a Deacon of North Oxford Baptist Church and among his special interests has been working in Special Olympics.
