OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss announced that first baseman/left-handed pitcher Stephen Head, from Raymond, Miss., and utility player Brian Pettway, of Vicksburg, Miss., have signed national letters of intent to play baseball for the Rebels, second year Head Coach Mike Bianco announced Tuesday. Ole Miss has now signed four during early fall signing period.

Head, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound, left-handed hitter, batted .340 last season for Hillcrest Christian. He also hit eight home runs and 12 doubles while driving in 42 runs. As a pitcher, he posted a 6-3 mark with a 1.73 ERA, and struck out 76 while walking 10 in 51 innings pitched.

Pettway, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, has played in both the infield and outfield, as well as at catcher during his prep career at Warren Central. He helped lead Warren Central to the Mississippi 5A state championship last spring, batting .483 with eight home runs, 20 doubles and 47 runs batted in. The right-handed hitter is a three-time All-County selection and earned first team All-State honors in 2001.

"We're excited about being able to sign both Stephen and Brian, because we feel we've signed the best right-handed and left-handed hitters in the state," Bianco said. "Both of them are also multi-position players, which will give us some flexibility in areas. We're looking forward to seeing where they will be able to help us the most."

The Rebels finished 39-23-1 last season in their first under Bianco, and advanced to an NCAA Regional. Ole Miss' recruiting class last year was rated No. 6 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and No. 10 by Baseball America.
