OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss and Arkansas-Little Rock split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

The Rebels took game one, 5-1, behind six shutout innings from starter Pete Montrenes (1-0) to give head coach Mike Bianco a win in his Ole Miss coaching debut. Montrenes a junior transfer from Southern California, allowed just one hit and two walks, while striking out a career-high seven to earn the win.

Senior Ronnie Goodwin pitched the final three innings to earn the save. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out three.

Senior third baseman Lance Jones went 3-for-4 with three doubles and one RBI in game one to pace the Rebels' eight-hit attack.

Starter Bobby Reed (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, only two earned, on six hits and two walks in six innings of work. He also fanned six.

The win marked Ole Miss' 20th straight season-opening victory.

In game two, the Trojans scored 11 runs in the first four innings to build an 11-3 lead to cruise to an 18-6 win, in a game that was called after seven innings due to the 12-run mercy rule.

UALR also took advantage of 15 walks issued by Ole Miss pitching.

Ole Miss starter Dan McShea (0-1) suffered the loss in his first pitching appearance since May 27, 1999, after missing last season when he was forced to undergo shoulder surgery. He was touched for four runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
