OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss softball pitchers allowed only four hits in 17 innings Sunday in splitting a pair of extra-inning games in day two of the Rebel/Easton Invitational. The Rebels (7-8) battled past Samford, 2-0, in eight innings, but fell to Evansville, 1-0, in nine.

Jennifer Hughes tossed her second shutout of the tournament and the third of her career Sunday against Samford. The senior from Missouri City, Texas, surrendered two hits, no walks with five strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the season.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and Jamie Cummings at third base, Kristi DiMarco blasted a Brianne Mertens pitch over the leftfield fence for the game-winning homer, the Rebels' first round-tripper of the 2001 season. DiMarco went 3-for-6 with two stolen bases in the doubleheader. Mertens (1-6) suffered the loss despite holding the Rebels to three hits over 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts.

The earlier game saw Holly Burris (1-1) maintain a no-hitter through 6.1 innings against Evansville only to stomach the loss. The sophomore from Germantown, Tenn., reliquished two hits and one unearned run over nine innings, but gave up a two-out RBI-single to Jessica Huff in the top of the ninth to give the Aces the lead.

UE's Lissa Conn sat down the Rebels in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Conn (2-0) went the distance for her second shutout of Ole Miss in the tournament.

For the second straight year, Evansville won the Rebel/Easton Invitational, going 5-1 in its season-opening tournament. The Aces won all three of their Sunday games, knocking off Southwest Missouri State, 2-0, and Samford, 5-3.

SMS went 2-2 in its first action of the year to place second, while Ole Miss finished third at 2-3. Samford (2-9) closed out with a 1-3 record.

The Rebels return to action next weekend in the OSU Cowgirl Classic in Stillwater, Okla. Ole Miss opens play Friday with Tulsa at noon (CT), followed by Oklahoma State at 2 p.m.
