LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team held Kentucky to 32.8 percent shooting from the field on their way to defeating the Wildcats 75-54, on Thursday night. Led by Becky Myatt's 15 points, the Lady Rebels (16-10, 4-9 SEC) were able to outshoot the Wildcats (6-19, 2-11 SEC) and steal a road win.
Ole Miss fell behind 15-6 early, but stepped up the defensive pressure and quickly got themselves back into the game. Led by junior Von Kirk, the Lady Rebels went on a 16-0 run forging a 22-15 lead at the 8:25 mark in the first half and never looked back. Kirk, who scored nine of her 12 first-half points during the run, helped Ole Miss open up a 37-24 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same as Ole Miss continued to dominate the Wildcats. The hot shooting Lady Rebels made 11-of-16 second half shots and cruised to the 75-54 win.
"I thought we played really well defensively," said Lady Rebel head coach Ron Aldy. "We also shot the ball really well. We had not been shooting well the past few games so it was good to see that tonight. This is a great win for us. Anytime you get a road win in this conference, it is a big win."
Myatt, who led Ole Miss in scoring with 15 points, made 4-of-6 shots from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and also had four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Kirk finished the game with 13 points, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line. Junior Saundra Jackson scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, while junior Sherika Wright tallied 11 points and two assists.
Kentucky was led by SeSe Helm with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Rita Adams with 12 points and five assists.
The Lady Rebels shot 61.2 percent from the field for the game, making 21-of-41 shots. They made 6-of-10 three-point shots and 27-of-36 free throws.
The Wildcats made only 19-of-58 from the field for 32.8 percent, including a dismal 2-of-10 from three-point range. They hit 14-of-21 from the free-throw line.
The Lady Rebels will stay on the road as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the University of Arkansas Lady Razorbacks on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
