RUSTON, La. - Chad Sterbens went 4-for-5 and Pete Montrenes earned his third straight win as Ole Miss (8-2) pounded Louisiana Tech (7-4), 14-4, Friday evening at J.C. Love Field in Ruston. The game was the first in a three-game weekend series between the Rebels and Bulldogs.
Montrenes (3-0) pitched eight innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, and struck out eight. The Bulldogs scored two runs off him in the fifth on Craig Montgomery's bloop, two-out double to snap his scoreless-inning streak at 16 2/3.
Sterbens had two of Ole Miss' six doubles on the night, and also drove in a pair of runs. He had an RBI single during the Rebels' five-run, seventh inning, and later had an RBI double in the eighth.
Leading 6-2, Ole Miss broke the game open with five runs in the seventh, as the first five batters of the inning reached base safely. Josh Christian and Carl Lafferty led-off the frame with back-to-back doubles to make the score 7-2. After Matt Tolbert singled, A.J. Cochet and Sterbens followed with RBI singles. Kris Cox and Clint Farrar capped the five-run inning with back-to-back sac flies to score Cochet and Sterbens.
Nine different Ole Miss players recorded a hit as the Rebels out-hit Louisiana Tech 13-7.
Louisiana Tech starter Derek Brewster (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, only two earned, on three hits and three walks. He also struck out four.
The two teams are scheduled to play game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
