OXFORD, Miss. - Senior guard Becky Myatt scored 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Ole Miss to a 69-53 win over South Carolina in women's basketball Sunday, at Tad Smith Coliseum. With the win, the Lady Rebels snatch their first conference victory at home this year and improve to 15-6 overall, 3-5 in the SEC.
Myatt went 6-of-11 from the field including five three-pointers. She also had three assists and one steal in the win. Junior TaShondrea Moton added a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 from the floor and also grabbed eight boards.
"We knew coming into the game that South Carolina had made some noise in this league," head coach Ron Aldy said. "They had just defeated Auburn on the road. We out-hustled them and played relentless on defense. Anytime you can out-rebound a team with their size you have to feel good about the effort.
"Becky stepped up today and played a very solid game. Sometimes when an athlete gets in a slump it can bring them down. She showed what she's made of today. TaShondrea had the best game of her career."
Ole Miss jumped out to a 13 point lead, 26-13, at the 10 minute mark of the first half on consecutive three-pointers by Myatt and Von Kirk. South Carolina used a 14-9 run to cut it to eight (35-27) at halftime.
The Lady Rebels led 46-36 with 15:02 remaining in the game, but the Lady Gamecocks pulled to within six (46-40) at the 14:06 mark on a layup and two free throws. South Carolina never got any closer, as the Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Gamecocks 23-13 the rest of the way.
Ole Miss shot 42.6 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The Lady Rebels held South Carolina to a dismal 29.4 percent overall and 23.3 percent from the three-point line. Ole Miss out-rebounded the much taller Lady Gamecocks, 46-43.
South Carolina's Tatyana Troina led the Lady Gamecocks with 19 points and Shaunzinski Gortman added 14. For the Lady Rebels, freshman Tywanna Inmon chipped in eight points and eight rebounds, and Saundra Jackson had eight points in the win.
The Lady Rebels will travel to Knoxville Thursday to face the nationally-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. Game time is 6:00 p.m. CST.
