TEAM NOTES
The 2001 season will mark the Rebels' first under head coach Mike Bianco. A former player and assistant coach at LSU, Bianco spent the past three seasons as the head coach of McNeese State. He compiled a 100-71 mark with the Cowboys, leading McNeese State to the 2000 Southland Conference championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Regionals.
Junior RHP Pete Montrenes has been named the Rebels' opening day starter against Arkansas-Little Rock. Montrenes transferred to Ole Miss this past summer after two seasons at Southern California, where he posted a 5-1 record with a 5.87 ERA in 49 career appearances, including 42 in relief.
Senior RHP Dan McShea is expected to start Saturday's game against the Trojans. It will be his first start since against Monmouth (NJ) in the 1999 NCAA Regionals. McShea missed last season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He went 7-3 with a 4.05 ERA as the Rebels' No. 2 starter during their regional season in 1999.
Saturday's start by McShea will be his 61st career appearance, tying him for seventh-place on the Ole Miss career list.
Junior OF Kris Cox played for Baseball Canada's Senior National Team this past fall in Panama City, Panama during the America's Qualifying Tournament for the 2001 World Cup. Cox started all six games in center field in the tournament, hitting .333 and drew a team-high seven walks to help Canada to a fourth-place finish and a berth in the World Cup. The Senior National Team is the equivalent of the United States' team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
